Final news
News from the umpires - play is abandoned for the day. Back tomorrow!
4:11pm
keenasmustard
It's been raining for the last 4 months.
Update
Yes, still raining here...
4:09pm
marchy22
Is it still raining?
keenasmustard
He's out now. I bet he got clever and started sweeping again.
Mark
He just needs to bowl overs to get into rhythm, he's always been like that.
chrissafc
get him in at number 3 :)
keenasmustard
Harmy may not be bowling better but he seems to remember how to bat.
chrissafc
gidman was always a decent cricketer.
chrissafc
bit early to suggest harmy is any better bowling. he didnt really do much bowling in his first game. wait and see how he goes i guess after a few games
keenasmustard
What is it about our bowlers that they play better for other teams - Gidman, Davies, Harmy.
Mark
Harmy up to 22 now! 3 4's and a 6
chrissafc
Team GB play down here on Friday night, looking forward to going to the game now beckham isnt in
tomb
Sigh, I meant Beckham, back to typing classes for me
tomb
All about KP,not so much as Team GB was all about Bechma going by the fuss about him being left out.
Mark
All-rounder Harmy! He always could bat a bit-he either gets out straight away or plays a few shots and makes some runs
tomb
Mark it was down to Harmison bowling a few overs of long hops (Lancs)allowing them to free their arms and swing the bat and also a couple of calls against us by the umpire, an almost certain run out was missed by the umpire. But we should have wrapped the game up by that point.
keenasmustard
Harmy must have cut out the sweep shot
2XI
2XI: No luck at all for the 2XI today - three lots of warm ups but no play. They have been officially called off for the day now.
3:52pm
chrissafc
must have a good swing after all the golf practice
marchy22
Harmison 14 from 13 for yorks
chrissafc
Andy Flower knows the craic, I very much doubt KP will be welcomed back into the 1 day setup in a hurry
Mark
I don't think Andy Flower will have him back if the reports that KP wants to be allowed to play the entire IPL tournament are true.
chrissafc
i just get bored of KP. It's all about himself all the time, like a little kid. I just hope he isn't re-called and made to sit it out.
Response to Stan Drop
They can add him in of they like - final squad doesn't have to be confirmed with ICC until early August.
3:48pm
Stan Drop
chrisafc, you didn't mention that the Engerlund T20 squad does not include K.Pietersen!
Mark
Yes, we should have had the Middlesex innings wrapped up just after lunch on the last day. I think we would have beaten Worcestershire and Warwickshire. Possibly a bit of bad luck against Lancs on the last day although I wasn't there so don't know for sure.
tomb
The first season we won the championship we only won 2 home games because of the bad weather, we also won the title with a low number of points so if we apply that argument we won that title by luck (on the last day of the season)
chrissafc
the last wicket vs middlesex killed us
tomb
Its certainly a big factor in our struggles but surely we cant lay all the blame on our poor season on the weather. We threw away the Lancs game, would have lost to Somerset at home without the rain and the other games rained off were no more than 60-40 in our favour. I think we would have beaten Middlesex and Worcester mind.
Mark
I read somewhere that weatherwise this is the worst cricket season since 1958. We have suffered more than any other div 1 county, wasn't it about 19 days lost to rain before this match? Batting a lottery when the pitches are damp.
tomb
Most cricket seasons in recent years have been ruined by the weather. Drier winters and wet summers these days.
keenasmustard
I'm really sick of this summer. Supposed to get better from next week. I hope so.
tomb
I thought somebody on here said it was gonna by dry for the first two days of this match. We should have known better, its a cricket match.
via SMS
Brandonia: No point kidding yourself that we're 'doing aswell as Notts' they're top of the league and we're bottom. Miles apart.
Rain....
Most definitely still raining here at Arundel...it's getting heavier too.
3:22pm
tomb
Marchy beat me to it. I'm sure batting is difficult, Worcestershire have recovered well. I think we would settle for a win and all the bonus points that entails even if we miss out on batting points
marchy22
Yorkshire and worcs both choose.to bat
BrianT
Except that wickets have been covered during an extended period of wet weather and batting seems difficult. Has anyone checked how many teams won the toss and decided to field first? Something to do while play is suspended.
tomb
No real point in comparing scores across the country as teams wickets are very different anyway.
BrianT
So are Middles-ex
via SMS
Chrissafc that's right brian. Good teams are near the top
Latest
I have retreated to the bus to do some work but can see that the covers were being peeled off but brollies were also going up - will have a venture out!
2:52pm
aapierre
Notts 147 / 5 some low scores
marchy22
Are we back on or has it started raining again
keenasmustard
Just seen that on Cricinfo that it's 3pm resumption.
BrianT
If you look at Notts score at home it puts our's in perspective. About on par with them and they ain't a bad team.
tomb
Play to resume at 3?
aapierre
worcs 133 / 6
via SMS
it's worth playing a few shots.

Brandonia: Decent recovery in the circumstances. Rocky has to be commended. We've got probably the best two men for a crisis at the crease too. Wonder if

We're hoping to get back on at 2.50pm providing there is no more rain and the light improves.

England 30-man squad named for World T20. Includes Durham's Onions, Borthwick and Stokes

Worcestershire 93/6 against Lancs
Latest
Still raining here and the covers are still firmly on...will keep you posted.
2:03pm
BrianT
Think I'll have a look at scores in the other matches. Wonder if anyone is 100 for none?
tomb
Shame Rocky couldnt have held on till lunch
Rain....
Rain stops play - reckon lunch will be taken 10 minutes early.
12:50pm
keenasmustard
Got to get 200 as an absolute minimum for batting points.
AleemDar
Still think 200 is minimum.
tomb
I meant now that we are 4 down, 150 then take it from there
AleemDar
200 should be the first target all the time. Ridiculous to suggest otherwise.
Rain...
Rain here - but we seem to be continuing...
12:47pm
tomb
150 should be the first target
AleemDar
Still get 260 from here.
tomb
Shame, he doesnt seem able to convert starts into big scores, maybe not the season for big scores though. Well played.
keenasmustard
I had a feeling that would happen.
Wicket...
Durham 84-4 after Stoneman is out lbw to Panesar on 50. Paul Collingwood joins Benks (7*)
12:44pm
tomb
Not till he's proven himsef for Durham I wouldnt have thought. Root will get a chance I think
AleemDar
I'm serious. Strauss won't be around forever. Who better than our Rocky?
tomb
AleemDar, I sense you are taking the p here
keenasmustard
Fifty for Rocky.
AleemDar
Got to be shoe-in for England now has Rocky.
tomb
Superb, he's a fighter if nothing else
dalesgirl
Well done Rocky
chrissafc
well done
safcluke
Well done Rocky.
Stoneman 50
That is a much deserved fifty for Mark Stoneman...big applause!
12:39pm
tomb
They'll come good, this is Gordons 10th season? Nothing personal against him but would prefer Myburgh or Richardson in.
AleemDar
I think he should stick with Smith and Muchall. They'll come good. They'll plunder runs against 2nd division attacks.
tomb
The argument is more against Cooks team selections AleemDar
Four!
Boundary for Stoneman - he's 35* and then add another four to his total. Much deserved!
12:30pm
Bowling change
Monty Panesar comes on for the 23rd over. Durham 64-3, Stoneman 31* and Benkenstein 6*.
12:29pm
AleemDar
Come on people. I'm sure the lads are trying their best. I mean it's not like Muchy was spot-fixing to be out first ball.
tomb
So far I meant
tomb
I think we have a chance of winning but I don't see how we can claim to be too good for Sussex based on our season too far. I go along regularly and really enjoy it.
Update
It's brightening up a tiny bit here, demonstarted by the increase of boundaries I reckon, hopefully conditions will continue to improve for the two at the crease.
12:22pm
BrianT
We might win a match.
chrissafc
"pleasantly suprised" - what with brian?
chrissafc
everyone on here wishes the team well Brian, but that doesnt mean to say people are happy with what is happening. i'll be at 3 days of the middlesex game, i'm going up to scotland and have the full 4 days booked off for the worcester game. i'll support the team always, but cant say i'm delighted/thrilled etc with things.
BrianT
Would be a good idea to go along and support them if you are able. You might be pleasantly surprised. Still think we'll be too good for Suss-ex
Durham 50
Durham pass fifty in the 20th over - four from Stoneman!
12:18pm
tomb
Looking forward to next Friday, been a while since a home county game, even longer since one with half decent weather.
Response to Brian T
Please do! It makes sitting in the cold feel more wrthwhile!
12:15pm
tomb
No because the forum is down so we need to air grievances on here.
BrianT
Can we not just support the team and leave all of the innuendo for the pub?
Mainze
Another sub 300 score beckons....
chrissafc
"contention" - richardson has done that most of the season for the 2nd XI. gets 1 knock then out the team.
Latest
Durham 47-3 in the 19th over - tough going out there - conditions are not easy!
12:12pm
keenasmustard
aapierre the only answer I can give without issues is that he's playing in the 2nds.
Blackwell
Blackwell is playing 2XI cricket this week to put himself in contention for the four day stuff.
12:10pm
chrissafc
blackwell is in Rugby today
aapierre
would someone explain where Blackwell is - without causing any issues please.
chrissafc
massive games indeed.
tomb
We can still stay up as long as Worcs and Surrey keep failing to win games, we play these teams at home, may well rest on those games.
keenasmustard
I've no preference for Muchall. Would rather Blackwell was playing but I gather that's a different story entirely.
tomb
The standard of wickets between county cricket and test match cricket is immense. its meant to be a step up but usually the wickets are dead, think Colly has been suprised by the difference. Don't think you can say we would have won the last game, by the time we were atting second everyone knew it was heading for a draw so no pressure on our batsman.
chrissafc
i'm still hopeful we can stay up but i can't really come up with many excuses at the moment after so much of the season gone.
safcluke
a Muchall*
safcluke
Are you s Muchall fan by any chance?
keenasmustard
Yes and would have won the last game had it not been for the rain. I'm confident we can still avoid relegation.
chrissafc
granted it may well be a tricky wicket, the excuses are becoming tiring. we're bottom for a reason.
safcluke
I'm quite aware it's an outer ground. But blaming the toss is nothing more than stupid. We are bottom of the league unless you haven't realised.
keenasmustard
safcluke the toss was crucial today. This is an outground under a lot of moisture. Whoever won the toss was going to field as the pitch would have been tricky to bat on. I presume you are not old enough to remember sticky dogs.
safcluke
Will Gidman, scored 1000 runs last season and 50 wickets last season. Yet not good enough to replace Muchall seemingly.
tomb
Sorry about the spelling
tomb
People like Coetzer must be scratching their heads as had nothing like the number of chances some have had. We had a lot of luck with the toss last season, its been cancelled out this year. Not a fan of playing at out grounds on dodgy wickets
chrissafc
some ridiculous excuses
chrissafc
what about the games before that then?
safcluke
Does the toss win or lose a game? I think not...
safcluke
Continue to live in that fantasy world marra.
safcluke
Dear me.
keenasmustard
We lost this game at the toss. Nothing to do with the batsmen.
Wicket...
Stokes is caught by Yardy off Magoffin for 20. Durham 34-3. Benkenstein joins Stoneman (10*).
11:58am
via SMS
It doesn't matter how many we get bowled out for if we bowl them out for less.
safcluke
Although keep him in the cb40 team as he's having a very good season.
safcluke
Excuse after excuse for Muchall. Stats dont lie. Time for a change surely?
BrianT
Miserable lot. I'm off.
chrissafc
36-3
chrissafc
weather is pretty much similar all around the country. we have 8 batting points, some other teams have 18, 19 and 22
tomb
All teams miss out on wins due to bad weather, though we've probably suffered more than most. We should have enough talent to be in the top three for me but its just not happening.
Wicket...
Durham three down....exact details when I get back to my post!

tomb
Gordy babe?
bobstersafc
stokes gone
keenasmustard
The weather didn't help.
via SMS
Brandonia: Just a question, if we get relegated will it be bad pitches to blame??
aapierre
Colly at three for me and move gordy babe down a bit - not out of the side
tomb
He should be fine at 3, Muchall isnt good enough against pace bowling to be a three. Is it a small ground at Arundel and have we palyed there before?
chrissafc
keep that scoreboard ticking over lads.
Four!
Four to Stokes - Durham 32-2 in the 12th over.
11:45am
chrissafc

Ed Syers
Personally don't think Stokes is a no.3 batsman. Either play Colly at 3 or promote/sign someone else.
Mackem_Dave
Determined to be positive today. Stokes is due a big innings. Lets get to 260, might be a good score in damp conditions.
chrissafc
myburgh/richardson/wood/jennings/blackwell - all available
keenasmustard
Let's just worry about this game. It's a tricky pitch to bat on whoever is playing.
Latest
Durham 28-2 with Stokes 16* and Stoneman 7*...drizzling lightly here

different formats. 92 runs in 7 innings going into this game isn't very good. it's now 92 runs in 8 innings. simply not good enough when you're trying to stay in the league.
tomb
I don't think he should be dropped, was just trying to work out Cooks thinking. Was down at Colwyn Bay and was impressed with Richardsons knock. Yes muchall made 96 but he never has a problem in the one dayers, just coinsistently struggles in the 4 day format, still think he would do a lot better if moved down the order, get Collingwood up to 4, Stokes at 3.
Frankjw
Agree its tough on Richardson, but would have been tough to drop Gord after playing so well on Sunday
chrissafc
can't be good for morale/motivation.
chrissafc
i'm on about richardson getting dropped on sunday. don't think it's fair on the lad he gets dropped after top scoring down in wales. also don't think it's fair he's not involved in this game dropped or not. tough on the lad.
Frankjw
Thought Gord was top scorer in last 40 over game?
Weather watch
Weather watch - here comes the rain...play continuing for the minute

Richardson was brought in as cover for Colly, so should Colly have been left out for him?
chrissafc
he was top scorer in the last cb40, not bothered whether he's cover or not, you shouldn't be dropped after top scoring in a team. bad craic that he's not involved in this game
2XI
2XI: The start is going to be further delayed - expecting no play before lunch
11:32am
tomb
He was only in to cover for Collingwoods injury I think so not dropped as such.
safcluke
Hopefully play a big role in our promotion push next season.
chrissafc
dropped from both teams after 1 innings. cb40 and lvcc
safcluke
Richardson must feel hard done by mind. One innings and dropped.
via SMS
Brandonia: Pitch probably is a bit ropey but it's never the batsmens fault with some people...... You'd think we were leading the league in batting buns points.
tomb
They seem determined to keep Muchall involved, he's a good one day player, not a number 3 in County cricket. My opinion is that Collingwood should take more batting responsibility and move up the order with someone like Richardson at 6.
Stan Drop
Always ominous when the home side chooses to field first (including us). Still looking at the weather forecast for the next three days this one looks like yet another soggy draw.
tomb
Was talking to al ovely lady last season about cricket in the Butchers Arms. I was only towards the end of the conversation she mentioned her son played, and when I asked who for, she said Sussex. It was Jimmy Anyons mam who'd come up to see him play against us for Sussex.
chrissafc
also dropped after highest scoring in the cb40 in wales.
chrissafc
valid point
via SMS
Brandonia: Richardson is dropped following one bad innings, however some people fail regularly and ate STILL in the side. The mind boggles.
Latest
Durham 19-2, Stokes is up to 15* and Stoneman is 1*.

13 off the fourth over!
marchy22
Will be lucky to post 150
Update
Definitely a toss you'd want to win - batting conditions are tricky. But, I reckon if one of two can bide their time it will hopefully get easier! Durham 12-2 in the fifth over.
11:17am
Mark
It must be very difficult batting conditions, pitch is probably damp. Bowling first almost certainly a big advantage.
Onions
Onions won't be returning to us as he has suffered a left hamstring strain, therefore we did not need to nominate a player at the toss.

Brandonia: Same old ***z, different day.

2XI
Durham 2XI v Warks three day game is due to start at 11.45am providing there is no more rain. Team is: Jennings, Blackwell (c), Myburgh, Singh, Pringle, G Clark, Raine, Coughlin, Weighll, Pearce (wk), Brathwaite. Plunkett misses out after an achilles flare up.
11:04am
chrissafc
he needs a good score this game as 92 runs in 7 innings won't impress many with myburgh wanting a place and hitting 70 runs yesterday and also taking at least 1 wicket
BrianT
Here we go
tomb
I think Muchall might have been dropped but sfter scoring 96 they have decided to give him more time?
tomb
Who will drop out for Onions, mitch?
Here we go!
Play is underway at Arundel! Will Smith and Mark Stoneman open the batting.
10:57am
chrissafc
he batted well up here the other week in the t20
parttimeanalyst
I see Garry Park has left Derbyshire "by mutual consent". I hope he finds another opportunity somewhere - I liked his attitude.
chrissafc
smith wasn't given a chance in the t20
aapierre
match practice would have been good but lets face it - the openers believe they can play all forms and so want their chance in that format also
2XI
The 2XI are hoping to get underway at 11.45 if there's no more rain at Rugby school. Fingers crossed!
10:48am
chrissafc
pleased for rushworth again, taking his chance very well.

Agreed Chris.
Sussex team
Sussex: Nash, Wells, Goodwin, Gatting, Wright, Yardy, Brown, Wernars, Magoffin, Anyon, Panesar
10:45am
chrissafc
fair enough. i think a few more of them could have done with some 4 day practice instead of our opening batsman carrying the drinks in the t20 when others were playing 3 day 2ndxi at brandon
aapierre
Myburgh wouldnt get in ahead of the side named anyways -
Mark
Chris-the Journal article implied Myburgh needed some match practice in 4 day cricket and that's why he is playing for the seconds. He'll probably be considered for the next CC game.
Durham team
Durham: Smith, Stoneman, Muchall, Stokes, Benkenstein, Collingwood, Mustard, Borthwick, Thorp, Claydon, Rushworth

Toss result
Sussex won the toss and are fielding first. Expecting to start on time.
