Close of play
Sorry folks, had a wifi issue at the close there and had to dash to get interviews done. Durham finish day two on 27-0, that's a lead of 67. Back tomorrow!
7:41pm
roker1973
just stick in the morra cos our bowlers have been on fire this season and will see us through
Tynevalleyblackcat
I would ideally be looking for 250, but I reckon we could win this with a 200 lead. The more the merrier though.
chrissafc
what sort of lead do people think would be deemed good?
chrissafc
tell you what mind, the team deserve huge credit for their reaction lately. ever since that rain interval vs middlesex. excellent character/determination etc etc
Tynevalleyblackcat
Betts actually took 8 wickets in 67 balls during that innings.
Tynevalleyblackcat
It was in the first innings and Northants were bowled out for 144, with Betts getting his 9 for 64, Brown 1 for 43, Forster 0 for 18 and Boiling 0 for 3. Match was drawn.
Tynevalleyblackcat
Your wish is my command. Match was in 1997 at Northampton and Brown took an early wicket with an LBW to make up the ten.
chrissafc
a draw wouldnt be the worst result in the world here but we now have a great chance of more. stick in lads
roker1973
yur right black cat but a draw away at notts as the others arnt doing nowt will do second best
BrianT
I'll leave that to you TVBC.
Tynevalleyblackcat
Great little session for us at the end there as well. 12 overs taken of the new ball, just the opening bowlers to see off in the morning and we can hopefully build a substantial lead. Great day for Durham.
Tynevalleyblackcat
If you have the date of the game, we can look up the stats on cricinfo. They have the scorecard for virtually every first class game ever on there I think.
BrianT
What an excellent day. Well done Durham.
BrianT
One of the shortcomings of the year book I'm afraid. Doesn't say. Betts was against Northants away.
bryn
always good to see melvyn betts getting a namecheck :)
chrissafc
superb effort
Tynevalleyblackcat
Did Betts get a run out though?
BrianT
Page 161 of the yearbook has best bowling. 9 for 67 third best first class for Durham. (Melvyn Betts 9 for 64 is second).
Tynevalleyblackcat
On the plus side, they are off for bad light at Worcester and that match is starting to look like a nailed on draw with a few bonus points thrown in, which helps neither of them.
BrianT
Otis got 10 and 2 v Hampshire 2007 at Riverside as it was known. Also got an 8 and two 7's that year.
Tynevalleyblackcat
Surrey crawling their way back into it v Middlesex. Could do with a few quick wickets to fall there.
Tynevalleyblackcat
Draws don't really do the trick Roker73. It would still be too tight for comfort. A win on the other hand would give us some real breathing space.

Please don't post 1 down!!
brandonia
1 down, 11 to go.
Update
Durham's second innings begins - we have 12 overs to face tonight. We lead by 43.
5:40pm
brandonia
Should've sent Bunny out to open the batting! The day he's having he might knock a sharp 50.
Mark
Wonder who the nigh***chman will be?! Not saying we'll need one but if we do...
brandonia
Nope. 12 apparently.
brandonia
Still 15 overs left if my maths serves me right.......
roker1973
get in lads, but hope the lads just see the nights overs out and stabalize till the morra
daleslass
Out of this world performance from Onions.
Ian17
Awesome performance from Bunny! If we can just put a decent amount of runs on the board in the second innings...
brandonia
How many overs we got left Yvette??
brandonia
Hey I'm not saying I'm not confident, just trying to be realistic, hopefully our batsmen can bat with a bit of confidence seeing as we're 40 ahead, if they get to 10 unscathed then we're 50-0 aren't we.
Tynevalleyblackcat
How important does that 10th wicket stand this morning seem now?
BrianT
Beyond my wildest dreams. Magnificent.
Tynevalleyblackcat
I would call that 9 and a half. Fantastic effort.
Wicket!
Wowzers - what an effort from Graham Onions this afternoon. Nine wickets and a run out! Notts all out for 154, 40 short of our first innings total.
5:28pm
brandonia
NINE FOR BUNNY!
brandonia
Slow hand clap from the members.....
Tynevalleyblackcat
Lets be confident here Brandonia. Onions to take this last wicket and then we are 50 without loss at the close!!
brandonia
How many overs are left Yvette? Could be a tricky little session to bat in for us.....
Tynevalleyblackcat
Great stuff.
BrianT
Important for other bowlers to try and get 10th one, I'm sure they are. This is a magificent effort by the team.
brandonia
Yep.
Mark
So he's still been responsible for all 9 wickets.
Wicket!
A direct hit from Onions sees Fletcher run out! Notts 154-9!
5:23pm
BrianT
By Onions! Will have to wait till Saturday for all ten.
brandonia
Onions runs Fletcher out to ruin his own chances of 10-fer!
brandonia
RUN OUT!!
BrianT
Forgot about Rushworth. Seem to remember comments about only being in the team because he was the captain's cousin.
brandonia
New best figures for Bunny. Previously 8-101.
Tynevalleyblackcat
He can't do this can he?
tomb
Wish was there to witness this
tomb
Thats my player of the season vote sorted then, sorry Rushy.

tomb
Think he was the best bowler Mark, still got left out next game
brandonia
Starting to get away from us now.
Response to tomb
It is first class so includes ani University or Tour games etc, as well Championship matches.
5:16pm
Mark
How many did he get in the test against West Indies?
brandonia
Beeb showing 43 wickets (Championship) before today.
tomb
Is that county or first class?
brandonia
Borthwick getting clattered to all parts.
Response to tomb
Graham's first class wicket haul is up to 54 after today!
5:14pm
brandonia
Yep, no rabbits these two.
brandonia
Yes Tomb, 50 wickets for the season.
Mark
Think so. The two that are in now can both bat-Philips has a FC century.
tomb
Was that his 50 county wicket this season?
tomb
If he finishes the season with a bowling average of 10 would that be enough to pick him! Why couldnt he have palyed instead of Bairstow or Taylor, go for the win. Better bowler than harmy for me. Not statistically for Durham but he never seems to have a poor game.
tomb
I repeat from earlier, thanks to Notts for allowing us to bowl second and have Graham bowling for us. I would have been pleased for him if he had played for England, he deserves it.
brandonia
Aye, balls to England daleslass - I prefer him here. County > Country.
daleslass
Amazing. Englands loss has definatley been Durhams gain
Mark
So would I brandonia
bryn
haaaaawaaayooooooh!!!
brandonia
I'd settle for a hat-trick from Badger to be fair.
Mark
Perfect! Only 3 more now Graham!!
Tynevalleyblackcat
Unbelievable. Talk about sending a message to the selectors.
Wicket!
Onions strikes for a seventh time! Franks is out lbw for 53. Notts 132-7.
4:56pm

Franks 50
Fifty for Franks, from 63 balls. Notts 132-6
4:54pm

brandonia
Could do with getting Franks. I can see him making 50.
Tynevalleyblackcat
I will be over the moon if we can just keep them to parity on the first innings.
tomb
All ten for Onions is a possibility.
BrianT
Do you think someone's upset him?
brandonia
I love Bunny.
Mark
Only 4 more to go Graham!
Wicket!
Mullaney is out lbw to...you guesseed it...Onions! Notts 116-6

chrissafc
thanks for the comment ray
raydetmold
this man is a genious
Final session
The last session begins, time for a second spell from Graham Onions. Notts resume on 113-5.
4:29pm
Mark
Stating the obvious but we do need Franks out as quickly as possible-he could take the game away if he gets going again after tea but right now I'm not too worried.
BrianT
I thought before lunch that we would have to get them out for less than 250 to have a chance of winning. I think this effort so far today has been excellent.
2XI latest
2XI: Durham all out for 175 and following on. Currently 30-1 after Raine was caught at fine leg.
4:21pm
Mark
Especially in a low-scoring game. One cameo innings or irritating partnership can make all the difference.
tomb
One reson why cricket is a great game is that the advantage can change unexpectedly at different stages of the game, keeps it interesting
Mark
Lead of 88 for Middlesex? They might win by an innings!
Mark
Always likely to be a partnership at some stage.Mullaney is a batsman and I was wrong about Franks having nearly 6500 runs-he's got 6700. Tea break at the right time for us because the two batsman will have to get themselves in again.
chrissafc
worcs game looking more likely to be a draw.
chrissafc
middlesex all out with a lead of 88
chrissafc
i'm happy
BrianT
An innings punctuated by good shots must come to a full stop. Do yous agree?
tomb
Its disapointing but 113-5 is a decent effort from us. Cant just expect wicket after wicket to tumble, unless we're playing Surrey......
marchy22
Well its up to yous if yous think letting the position we had them slip isn't that bad that's your choice strange but your choice
Tea
Tea time - Notts 113-5. Back soon!
4:12pm
Mark
Scored almost 6500FC runs.
Mark
Franks is an all-rounder. Just checked and he has 4 FC hundreds & 35 50's averages late 20's.
tomb
Older ball I meant, duh....
tomb
Marchy, its never usually that straightforward. New ball, different bowlers, bit of luck and things change, Franks is better than a tailender just like Mark Wood is.
marchy22
Partnership 60 and counting
Mark
Franks is a dangerous batsman. The tea break might break his concentration.
marchy22
From 50-5 we should have been looking at having them bowle out by now instead of letting the tail wag
tomb
Thought Franks could hold a bat? Its easier for a lower order bat to have a dart, happens all the time.
chrissafc
Worcestershire 138/5
chrissafc
Middlesex lead by 72 runs with 1 wicket remaining in the 1st innings
BrianT
Just got back in. Can't believe people are moaning.
marchy22
These two will get them past our score
Bowling change
Scott Borthwick comes on for the 24th over. Notts 101-5.
3:53pm
marchy22
We should have been looking at a 70 run lead but we can forget that now
Update

marchy22
Frankie 36 of 29 its beyond a joke
marchy22
We get rid of their best batsmen and let a tail ender smack us all over the park
raydetmold
Franks 30 off 23 , see what happens when a positive batsman comes in
marchy22
We need to break this partnership now
tomb
Superb stuff from Bunny, making England look a bit stupid but then I gather they're doing quite well also today. Whole Lancs thing is a farce, hope they go down rather than us (obviously)or Worcester.
marchy22
They are scoring too freely come on lads
Bowling change
Mark Wood comes on to replace Onions for the 19th over. Notts 75-5
3:33pm
Update
Notts 71-5 now, Franks 18* and Mullaney 8*.

That's 5 wickets for exactly our last wicket stand!

Gan on lads!!! Get in!!

Yes!!!

That's five for Onions! Read is caught behind first ball. Notts 50-5!

it's ridiculous that and quite laughable for old trafford
Mark
Lancs have moved another game from Old Trafford to Liverpool! Their final match of the season against Surrey.
chrissafc
16.77 his batting average now, come down a bit in recent games. was around 24 not so long ago
Mark
Forecast is showers this afternoon and tomorrow but fine on Saturday.
chrissafc
he's one of our top averages with the bat
raydetmold
he should be opening the batting as well , cant do any worse
tomb
Just noticed Onions has been quite expensive, tut, tut, maybe we should drop him....
tomb
I mean bat first, oops
tomb
Thanks to Notts for allowing us to bat second meaning Onions could bowl for us first up. And thanks to England for firing him up again. Weather forecast for last two days anyone?

2XI update
2XI: Two wickets in quick succession at South North, Clark and Coughlin out with Durham 118-8.
2:54pm
Mark
Superb effort by Graham all season. For me he would be an automatic pick in the test team but, from a selfish point of view, I'm pleased we have him.
raydetmold
oh Jimmy Jimmy
tomb
45 wickets for Graham at around 14 for us this season, hard to see how anyone could do any better.
Mark
and then*
Mark
Read has been a thorn in the side-he always seems to come in with the team in trouble and the plays a big innings.
tomb
Their two best batsman out and Taylor not available, we have a good chance of bowling em out cheaply. Read can be a good player on his day though.
Mark
Excellent.
Tynevalleyblackcat
Good stuff.
chrissafc
keep it going
Wicket!
A second wicket for Onions! Lumb is out lbw for 12. Notts 31-2 after 8.3 overs.
2:46pm
chrissafc

marchy22
We need wickets fast come on
Tristan
Ben stokes batting for lions now btw 2(13) so far
Tristan
England lucky to have got wickets so cheaply. they only have 4 bowlers plus trott who can bowl at all now, if they had struggled they would have nobody in reserve but doesnt look like that will happen. england need an all rounder badly
Update
Notts 24-1 after 6.4 overs, Wessels 12* and Lumb 11*
2:38pm
tomb
Thought England might have gone with the extra bowler, Onions over Bresnan rather than pick another batsman as we need to win the game. Would be very demoralising for some people but he seems to just get on with it.
Mark
Those Lions matches are even worse, admittedly this time Notts have suffered more than us with test & Lions calls but ridiculous imo take players out of cc at the crucial stage of the season for Lions games.
2XI update
2XI: Myburgh was out after lunch and Ingram followed shortly after. Durham 87-6.
2:27pm
chrissafc
very annoying
Mark
Annoying when he is always in the squad and then always left out of the X1.
chrissafc
it will be a shame for him, but from a selfish point of view, i want him playing for durham
tomb
I'm happy just a bit of a shame for the lad, thin khe deserves more games for England
chrissafc
i'm happy he's playing for durham
tomb
Still think he's better than Broad but got shot down for that on here a few times. Never fails on an opening spell.

Bowling update
Chris Rushworth opens the bowling at the Pavilion End.
2:16pm
Wicket!
Hales is out lbw to Onions sixth delivery! Notts 3-1 after the first over.
2:14pm
Play resumes
Play resumes after the lunch break - Riki Wessels and Alex Hales open for Notts. Graham Onions will bowl the first over.
2:10pm
Update
Graham Onions has arrived and will replace Mitchell Claydon. After the extended first session tea will be taken at 4.10pm.
2:04pm
Tynevalleyblackcat
I think you could be right. Time will tell.
chrissafc
i think that could be a decent score
Tynevalleyblackcat
Bit annoying to lose that wicket 6 runs short of a bonus point and in the last over before lunch. Would have been good psychologically to have kept them waiting over lunch having taken the half hour.
tomb
Surrey signed Pieterson for the PR and interest that comes when Pieterson plays his two domestic games a year. Think Notts had hoped to have Taylor in their batting for a couple of years before England came calling.
2XI
2XI: Durham 70-4 at lunch, Myburgh 22* and Clark 17*.
1:33pm
Wicket...
Durham all out for 194 as Wood is caught behind off White for 34. Lunch is now being taken.
1:32pm
BrianT
They'll be well compensated by England if he gets a central contract. Sign a better overseas player to replace him and bank the balance of the money. Why do you think Surrey snapped up Petersen?
tomb
Dont think Notts expected Taylor to be called up for England so quickly or dont see why they signed him.
BrianT
Surely Read knows whether that bounced or not.
BrianT
As someone keeps saying, let's see how well Notts bat before we rush to condemn in this game. Not excusing previous performances this season.
Partnership 50
Fifty partnership for Rushworth (24*) and Wood (34*) Durha 193-9
1:27pm
tomb
Oliver Twist is a good tale also
Tynevalleyblackcat
Lets be positive. From 144-9, these two have done brilliantly well.
tomb
Easier to bat against an old ball and the pressure is off them with the bat.
BrianT
Oh. I see!
aapierre
193 for 9 so far good tail
raydetmold
of course its easier to bat against an old ball , thats why we have batsman to bat against a new ball ?
BrianT
Easier to bat against an old ball. Not that we've done that too often. Suspect we've got to get them out for 250 or less to have a realistic chance of winning by Saturday.
Latest
The current partnership stands at 41 - Durham 185-9.

Tynevalleyblackcat

Come on lads, dig in. That elusive bonus point is almost in sight.
BrianT
Had this argument before. Doesn't work like that. Touch Wood.
CollingwoodFTM
Sorry, should say BrianT.
CollingwoodFTM
You've just guaranteed a record run of ducks for Wood TVBC. ;-)
Tynevalleyblackcat
167-9 Useful runs hopefully for this last wicket.
BrianT
Very impressed with Wood last week. He's quick and can hold a bat.
Latest
Five minutes until the scheduled lunch break, but think the extra half hour will be taken. Durham 166-9, Rushworth 9* and Wood 21*
12:55pm
Tynevalleyblackcat
Off for rain again at Worcester, which is good news.
BrianT
That seems like a possibility but posters were critical of the decision to put Mustard in at 4 yesterday. Borthwich was tried 2 years ago. Rethink needed for next season. In fairness numbers 1 to 7 have all struggled in most games this year.
tomb
Think the opener is there to see off the new ball, which Smith is capable off but hasnt mananged lately. Could try Jennings and Myburgh in at 3?
raydetmold
i dont know Brian , so obviously theres no body else , i know its championship but why not give Mustard a chance , might get a more positive start ?
chinesecut
Mustard and stoneman
BrianT
Who, from our current squad, would you have to open, Ray?
raydetmold
Good morning everybody , can somebody please explain why Smith is still opening the batting , is it because of his tremendous batting average this season ?
2XI
2Xi: Worcs declare on 392-5. In reply, Durham are 14-2, Raine and Singh are the men out.
12:41pm
BrianT
I think Claydon will open the bowling till Onions is ready. I understand that he can start in mid over whem Mitch is tired.
chrissafc
canny knock that by mitch
Wicket...
Claydon is caught by Wessels off Carter for 17. Durham 144-9.
12:37pm
BrianT
Don't think they will either.
keenasmustard
144/9 so we wont get a batting point today.
tomb
Any chance Collingwood can bat any higher than 6. Coming in that low does not give him much time to make a contribution, it is also pretty pathetic, when he has the experience to take the pressure off some of the other players
tomb
Disapointed for Onions as he cant do much more to get in the team then he has been. Dont see the point in continually calling him up without playing him.
BrianT
The system is not perfect but at least it is an improvement on years ago when he would have had to sit out the matches. What I find unacceptable is that we can be told how many overs he could bowl for us. I believe this was the case at Headingley last year. Different if he was a contracted player and we could sign a replacement, (not that there is anyone half as good).
Tristan
in fact ive gotta be off anyway so ill just say haway the lads
Tristan
not sure what to say, trying to avoid jinxing us. im gonna keep quiet i think!
Tristan
aye that does sound familiar now you mention it. probably would be no point in this case though..
BrianT
Tris. I said a while ago on here that it sounded like (from radio comm) that 175 might be a par score. Suggested that we might get 150.
peter_brent
I think if Claydon was not out at lunch, Onions could come out to bat in his place after lunch. Seem to recall an overnight not out batsmen been replaced in the morning against us a few season ago.
daleslass
I won't say we've batted badly until I see how they bat
Tristan
quick question - now that claydon has batted in the match does this affect how soon onions can take part in the match or can he bowl from the off?
Wicket...
Durham 123-8 after Thorp is caught by Carter off Phillips for 1.
12:14pm

I've no problems with players playing for England. I would like to know how many miles Bunny has travelled in the last 12 months or so not to play for England.
Tristan
*know that
Tristan
he has the talent we all now that. but so do a lot of players, it all depends on taking chances. stokes may the get the opportunity today, but he's batting down at six so... agreed of course - good luck to him!

You'd better get used to being without Stokes because he has the talent to be an England regular. And good luck to him, hope he does well.
Response to peter_brent
Yes, Ben did replace Bairstow in the Lions squad.
11:47am
peter_brent
I assume it's KP's fault. Didn't think Stokes was in the Lions squad did he replace Bairstow ?
chrissafc
mark wood was one of our top scorers at trent bridge last season. hope he does similar
Cricketbadger1970
For me we have gone with one bowler too many especially with Onions returning. We have struggled for runs! Richardson or Blackwell should have played.
marchy22
Poor to replace a batter with a bowler
BrianT
You could argue that Stokes has been our best bowler in last 2 games. It's his re-emergence as a bowler of quality that has given the tean the biggest boost.
Tristan
good a time as any for wood to show his batting ability
peter_brent
replacing Stokes with a bowler for a side who have struggled to make runs all season seemed strange yesterday and today more so. Lets see if the bowlers can dig the batsmen out of the hole.
BrianT
Sounds difficult out there. 175 sounds like a par score. Might get 150 then see how they do.
marchy22
Poor again in the championship

Giles is a selector isn't he? He'll want Graham to help us beat Notts to help out Warwickshire. Only joking!!

i'm pleased he's been allowed to join up with the durham team, sometimes the ecb can be funny about it
chrissafc
ah ok. hope he does well for durham then. haway lads

So, no Graham Onions in the England squad so he'll be on his way here now - we'll expect him about lunch time. Mitchell Claydon will be the player replaced.
