We're off...
That latest downpour means that play is now abandoned for the day. We'll try again tomorrow!
2:42pm
chrissafc
looks like adams is out for the season, big blow to notts that
tomb
Have we got a name for the upcoming permanent stand. Did they settle on the Dale Benkenstand?
chrissafc
more than enough
chrissafc
think we have plenty bowling options
tomb
We havent needed the fill in bowlers lately, we've been bowling teams out in two sessions.
marchy22
I know rocky bowled a few overs when playing for Blaydon before but would never bowl in county cricket
Mark
I've heard Jennings is a good bowler, think he was bowling yesteday because Thorp got injured.
Mark
Play not called off yet (according to Lancs twitter update) but umpires might decide to call it off soon
tomb
Hughes and Stoneman would be a good contrast at the top of the order. If we signed though undoubtedly the Aussies would pick him for the Ashes. Ben Harmy didnt seem like the sharpest tool in the box, certainly had potential, thought he was okay as a 4th seamer in the Championship. Jenings can bowl at that level but dont think we had plans to bowl him much in the firsts? His scores in the first team dont reflect the way he has played at times.
marchy22
I think Jennings may harbour international ambitions. Seems he is gonna be a very special player
chrissafc
jennings is a very useful bowler, done it all season for stockton and 2nd xi
marchy22
I think Jennings is a natural opener done it for the seconds and stockton all season
mickeyboy
I live down South and have some Kent mates. They are not keen on Ben already saying too sulky
tomb
Jennings is a no 3, dont think of him as all rounder. Colly and Benks are specialist batsman and Stokes is an all rounder but could hold his own just as a batsman.
chrissafc
agree marchy, ideal signing and a very good player. he showed that up here last week
chrissafc
it was the day we beat lancs away and benks got the record runs. he didnt care when i mentioned it to him
marchy22
Hughes would be the ideal signing as he is sheer class in all forms of the game
chrissafc
remember him walking around marton cricket club last season for the 2nd xi (he was sub), looking gloomy, miserable and generally not a care in the world.
Mark
He did mickey
mickeyboy
Didn't Mike Hussey say that he had unfinished business at Durham?
chrissafc
ben harmison - wrong attitude.
mickeyboy
I remember saying that about Ben Harmison. Yes, the kids are the future and Colly is the man to bring them through
chrissafc
plenty talent at the club, they just need to be given a chance
Mark
We definitely need a proven, top class opener. Trouble is they are hard to come by-best England players never available and same goes for top overseas players. Ed Cowan would be a decent choice but think he wants to go back to Gloucestershire. Graeme Smith, Amla or Mike Hussey would be ideal!
chrissafc
harrison is another player who we need to look after and give game time to whenever possible.
chrissafc
these lads need developing and game time will benefit them. jennings will be something special, I'm certain of that.
chrissafc
muchall isnt good enough for the lvcc, we need to move on. would love to see hughes sign. other than that i think we need to concentrate our efforts on current younger/2nd xi players such as richardson, wood, jennings, raine, singh, coughlin, etc.
mickeyboy
4 all rounders in Stokes, Jennings, Wood and Colly (+ Benks) I just feel we are light up top and need specialist batsmen who will be more consistent
tomb
Muchall could be kept for the 40 overs and as a stand in batsman for the LVCC. Smith as a stand in opener. Plunkett has anoyher year left but would rather see Mark Wood get a run in the team. Harrison has done well but he is already picking up injuries. My team would be as we are now with a new opener and with Mark Wood as an all rounder with Stokes at 3.
chrissafc
hard to disagree with that. muchall should be nowhere near the county side next season
mickeyboy
Colly is the man to rebuild. We need to lose Smith, Harmison, Plunkett and other fringe players including, i'm sorry to say Muchall and get in an overseas, Aussie batsman.
tomb
I dont usually say this, but I have really wanted Lancs to go down this year, after the farce that was last season and the end of this season with the ground swaps. I think they're a poor but usually spirited side but wouldnt have won the league last year if not for playing at Liverpool. Not too happy with the reaction of their fans when they won up here in fortuitous circumstances.
mickeyboy
Harmison has had a benefit for the last 2 years with the contact he's on for little or no return
Mark
That would be funny!
chrissafc
it would be amusing if the weather in manchester is nice
Tynevalleyblackcat
Nice to be able to sit through the rain, knowing its helping us for a change. Lancs need to win and we don't. I would take a rained off draw now
tomb
Could we talk Strauss out of retirement to open for us....... Hew would get on with Will, both ex Durham Uni, both polite well spoken lads, both world class batsman... wait, scrap the last one.
chrissafc
:)
tomb
Thought it would be on a golf course or at St James' Park
chrissafc
yeah thre is talk of a benefit game, heard it will be down in London
marchy22
hughes and harris would do me as signings as we have plenty still at the club
tomb
If we lose Harmison and say Plunkett off the wage bill, maybe Brathwaite too, then could get Harris in.Is it not Harmisons benefit next season? Save up your pennies.
chrissafc
it's time we gave the current crop a chance instead of wanting to bring in loads of new faces. an opener is a must but we have plenty elsewhere already at the club. got to start giving these lads a chance.
marchy22
i would have carberry and definitely hughes as far harris he would be a great addition if england plan on onions being their drinks carrier again next summer
tomb
Rushworth and Mark Davies would have been a tight partnership as well. Stuart, your post is taking over the page.....
chrissafc
hughes is the opener i would like to see at durham. that is the only thing i would like to see brought in. obviously would like to see the back of harmison and i think some others need chasing also.
stuartp
As I said a rebuilding phase. Over the next 2-3 seasons most of the team will have had to change. Diva,Colly,Benks,Plunktt,Davies,Thorp,Harmison&Harmison,Coetzer. We will be building around Stoneman,Smith,Muchall,Stokes,Jennings,Mustard,Richardson,Borthwick,Rushforth,Onions,Claydon,Wood
tomb
Carberry? Phil Hughes? Harris, good prospect but we're overloaded with bowlers already.
Mark
Colly's plan to have bowlers who apply pressure by accurate bowling has worked perfectly-Thorp is great at that type of bowling. Wood & Harrison also very promising strike bowlers who will be v handy if/when weather is better next year and pitches are more batsmen friendly.
marchy22
id like to see durham join notts in making james harris from glamorgan a contract offer
tomb
The most important issue is, are the beer prices staying the same next season?
marchy22
collingwood said after the worcs that durham would be making signings this off season with an experienced opener a definite
tomb
Smith has another year, not sure about muchall, think he has another year? If Plunkett does stay it must be his last chance to come good. Got the impresion Thorp had signed, he said he was staying on next season after the Worcs game.
chrissafc
collingwood likes callum thorp, fully expect him to sign his 1 year deal
chrissafc
benks will be staying. harmison and plunkett have no future at durham
tomb
Benks can carry on for two more seasons hopefully. Thorp should manage another year at least. Colly two more years. I like the look of Wallace for Glamorgan but dont know if theres any chance of getting him. Not sure Strauss can be classed as great, his century haul is excellent but an average of 40 in the recent test matchera is probably below par on flat wickets against average bowling attacks. Good bloke and great captain though.
Rain....
Just as the inspection was due, the heavens have opened! Pretty heavy rain too....
1:40pm
brandonia
I take it the 1:30 inspection was knocked on the head?!
Mark
Thorp is out of contract at the end of the season but has been offered a one year extension.
stuartp
Questions about Plunkett, Thorp is getting close to the end of his career, Benks likewise Harmison and Blackwell I'd agree with tomb are probably gone. So we do really need to look at what the options are for the future.
Mark
Thunder?! It would be OK for us if there was no play today, a draw and a few bonus points will do nicely. Agree about Strauss, top man and player.
brandonia
Play abandoned for the day at Edgbaston.
Haslam
Just had some fairly dramatic thunder here - not looking good for getting back on as its brought rain
chrissafc
andrew strauss. a true cricketing great. enjoy your retirement.
tomb
One bad thing for me this season is we've lost so much cricket. Not just with the weather but winnig games in two and a half days, I fancy a nice long four dayer at home against Sussex.
Mark
If we had lost against Middlesex I think we would have gone down.At the members forum after day 1 of the game Colly said it doesn't take much to turn a season around and suggested Borthwick getting a wicket with the last ball of the day might just be a turning point. How right he was!
tomb
The team seem to be all together again. Doubt we'll see blackie or Harmy again. Stoneman has come on well and Rushworth has had a cracking season. Borthwick will get better. Colly has finally found his form. Happy days. Still need an opening bat and possibly an established number three.
BrianT
There have been several times this year when I saw no hope. I am so happy to be where we are. High hopes for next year with one big signing to help current squad. Does anyone know if Amla's mother is from round here?
stuartp
We seem to be in a rebuilding phase. We have lost or look like losing quite a few players this year, with a few more to go I think. The new generation is coming through and we need them to kick on if we are going to consolidate our position in Div 1 for another generation (of players at least)
tomb
It was a close call in that game, confidence might have completley gone if we'd lost it, since then we've had the belief and bits of luck (Notts)to come through the matches. I know its not 100% certain yet but delighted to still be (almost) in Div 1 next season. Hampshire can take their 20 20 cup and shove it up their you know whats.
Mark
Same for me tomb, was confident we would come good but at several points during the Middlesex game (after our first innings and before Thorp & Borthwick rescued the 2nd) I change dmy mind and thought we'd go down.
tomb
I thought we would survive though had my doubts halfway through the Middlesex game! Didnt expect to put 4 wins in a row together mind, thought it would be a very tense end to the season. Hopefully we can carry the excellent recent form into next year and challenge for the title.
Mark
Yeah they play each other in last match. We're prob guaranteed at least 6 more points-even if we lose this game and the last 1 we'll surely get max bowling points. Wouldn't count on (m)any batting ones though on this pitch or the Riverside.
tomb
Good point Brian. If there any points deductions that might complicate it as well. I think lancs and worcs to go.
BrianT
It is not possible for Surrey and Lancs to win all of their games.
Mark
Yes, highly unlikely we will get back into trouble.
tomb
We were saying against Worcester if they beat us and win their next game, etc, etc, we will be fine.
BrianT
Only one team earned 24 points from any game this season in league 1.
tomb
Well if we take the most pessimistic outcome possible then we are not totally out of the woods, realistically Lancs, Surrey, Worcs arent going to win all their games and we will get some bonus points at the very least.
marchy22
we lose this one and lancs win their game in hand then they would be back to around level points
tomb
Agree, hard to be interested in England when its a mixture of South African players and golden boys (Broad)who I dont rate as a bowler. If onions plays will take an interest again. Its also clear that most teams dont give two figs about test matches at the moment aside from South Africa, Australia and England.
marchy22
we arent safe from relegation tomb
Mark
Not sure we're totally safe yet, if we lost this match might get dragged back into the relegation dogfight.
tomb
Nice to not be worried about relegation, oh sorry Lancs.
BrianT
Draw a circle, 25 miles radius, centred on Lords and you'll probably find your opener within it.
marchy22
cook says the wicket dried out and made it alot easier to bat on aqnd also that it is gonna spin alot which is not good news for us
Latest
Another inspection will be made at 1.30pm
12:54pm
stuartp
Mind you I reckoned that we would be batting shortly after tea yesterday. Anyone care to explain what happened? I had to leave the office for the several hour drive home and missed the last 100-150 for Lancs.
stuartp
Compton is the stand out player in the LVCC at the moment. You would have to think he stands a chance of getting into the team once he recovers from the current injury.
Mark
Possibly Trott Marchy? Move him up to open and bring someone else into the middle order. Or maybe Joe Root if selectors think he is ready for test cricket.
Latest
No rain here since first thing - will have an update once the umpires have taken a look
12:36pm
marchy22
who will be the new opener for england then?
manurule175
New opener for England?
brandonia
Is it raining Yvette?
Mark
He said his form with the bat was the major reason for the decision to quit and he was thinking about retiring before the KP story broke
Tristan
shocker. didnt see this coming two days ago. not even just international cricket either? he must have plenty of runs left in him
BrianT
So it's a Strauss Waltz then? Is he any relation?
Mark
lol Do you know Michael Vaughan has aslready signed up for the show? Seriously!
keenasmustard
So it's Strauss for the next series of Strictly Come Dancing then.
Mark
Cook confirmed as test captain
BrianT
Very sad to hear he is retiring from all cricket because he can play the game. Shows what the pressure is like. Hope he ain't going to work for Sky though!
daleslass
It was interesting to hear Cork speaking about it on Sky
geordieboy
KP for captain!
Mark
Strauss retiring from all cricket according to Sky
Tristan
@BrianT i kind of feel the same way, can't really put my finger on why. doesn't help that i really dislike trott and he has become a bland run machine
BrianT
All I know is that over the last year or two I've started to lose interest in England and this turned to dislike. I Think it started with Chris Broad's on-field criticism of other fielders.
Mark
Cook is a player who always seems to rise to a challenge-people doubted his one day credentials and he proved them wrong. Will be interesting to see how he goes as test skipper.
Tristan
im only really saying prior cuz i like him, seems a good character but not really captain material. swann would be a total maverick - would be fantastic or abject failure but would be fun all the way through!
Tristan
don't really think cook or broad are good choices. bresnan not good enough to get in the team. prior or swann for me
BrianT
You're talking daft now! Bresnan? That's the problem, Cook, Prior, Bresnan, Broad. It will probably be someone like Rory Hamilton Brown. Swann, now you're talking sense.
Tristan
'supposed to' yes. so kick him out, problem solved, don't see how this affects captaincy? i would love to see swann as captain
daleslass
Tristan - wasn't the almighty KP supposed to have sent texts dissing Strauss ?
manurule175
Id say cook or prior yea, then maybe Bresnan?
Mark
Mike Atherton suggested Matt Prior as a possibility Brian. This was last week, before Strauss was expected to resign.
BrianT
Alistair Cook is already showing signs of form being affected by pressure. I don't think he is the right man to be England Captain but don't know who else would be.
manurule175
I think its the right time for him to go, got outplayed totally by SA and rightly lost NO1 spot because of it, time for a change. + im a big alastair cook fan haha!
Tristan
lets be brutally honest, strauss is not a very good captain, he just captains one of the strongest sides in world cricket
marchy22
if he retires from test cricket too who would be next in line to be cooks opening partner
Tristan
i don't see how kevin pietersen has anything to do with strauss resigning - if that is what is happening. if anything it should bring the team closer together shouldnt it? i thought that was teh whole point of dropping KP
BrianT
Do you think one man would have caused disruption if Brierley, Close, Collingwood, etc had been captain? Weak captaincy may have contributed to the problem.
daleslass
I think its disgusting how one man can cause the possible resignation of the captain and cause so much disruption in the squad.
Tristan
what odds for KP next captain?
BrianT
Not all bad news then!
keenasmustard
What a day. No cricket being played so far and Strauss resigns as England captain.
brandonia
Make that Start Delayed at EVERY Championship ground!
brandonia
Start delayed at Taunton.
Tristan
terrible passage of play between 58-5 to 221-6. no shame in a draw, but it would have been nice to get that 5th in a row
BrianT
All 4 league 1 matches are in west and will be rain affected today.
chrissafc
cant see much play then. it was bright and sunny yesterday and it took them ages to get on.
brandonia
Might not be a bad thing for us that time is being lost from the game.
Latest
There will be no play before lunch, which will be taken at the normal time.
9:41am
Day two
There's been a fair amount of rain this morning. It has stopped and the water is being mopped up but there will be a delay. As soon as the umpires give an update we'll pass that on.
9:34am
