Sob Sob. I know it's only a game but my week's ruined.
durham dave
Sometimes wouldnt win more than 2 championship games a season. Hope it doesnt return.
durham dave
Just a shame thought we could dominate for years. Not trying to put the players down but do we want the bad times again.
safcluke
Although the point you are trying to make is spot on.
safcluke
Cant wait for the ODI v Australia myself.
durham dave
Thats true Gidman doing well . Im afraid guys our summer will be spoilt .Cast adrift but as long as club got full house for aussies who cares??
safcluke
our oldest players are our best players
safcluke
they let a very fine batsman/bowling all rounder go. Will Gidman.
durham dave
Too many old players and no good young batters (stokes apart).Clubs fault rather have new stand and full 20/20 crowds .
durham dave
Watched cricket for 30 years and knew signs from last season and this. Never mind roll on winning 2nd division.
safcluke
coming to the pro 40 on Sunday. It better be good.
durham dave
I wrote on here after only 2 championship games we would go down. Everyone laughed at me but where do we stand now?????
safcluke
I took a £100 bet with someone 4 weeks ago who said we would go down. I said we wouldn't. Shall I just pay up now?
Mark
I assume Graham was referring to our result!
Mark
I hope you do well in your fantasy team Brandonia but don't want him to get another ton next week!
Mark
Tweet from Bunny "Wow...safe to say I didn't see that coming"
via SMS
Brandonia: Oh well, atleast Ashwell Prince scored a ton for my fantasy team!
via SMS
Brandonia: I'd go as far as to say it was more unbelievable from where we were at Tea on Day 1. 232-2 or whatever it was.
dalesgirl
Mark I agree.
bryn
Roll on Sunday mini milks and the feel good factor aal round! (fingers x)
Mark
Yeah, hope for good weather and good cricket on Sunday.
dalesgirl
Whatever. At least the weather has to be nice on Sunday.
Sir gareth
Im wrng quite a lot of the time
dalesgirl
Roll on Sunday
chrissafc
all the best everyone, roll on sunday
dalesgirl
Sir Gareth your opinion always has to be right tho !
dalesgirl
Opening the Diamond White later. Shocking performance again. Lets hope questions are asked
Sir gareth
Everybody entitled to their opinion
chrissafc
cant believe we've lost this game within 3 days after been 158-1 on the first day
Mark
I'll be heading to the pub soon!
christoff
Well Durham have turned me to drink - Stella in the garden laters lmcers
Mark
Colly always a good team player and someone the rest of the players(hopefully anyway) have a lot of respect for. Throughout his career he's always had periods where he looks hopelessly out of form so although he does need runs I'm confident they will come.
chrissafc
well done to somerset
Mark
Colly needs a big score, can't blame him today when he was stranded with the tail and there were signs in the 2nd innings of the Somerset game of a return to form. Right now though I think we need his experience esp with Benks missing.
Somerset win
Somerset claim the win, by five wickets. We take seven points from the match.
6:19pm
dalesgirl
Chrissafc - there's a few players on thin ice
via SMS
Brandonia: On a brighter note, anyone fancy coming to Arundel in July?!!
via SMS
Brandonia: Ive never known such poor batting from Durham since the early days of the First Class days.
Mark
He does, always worth taking notice of what Tim says. Can't blame the coach if players keep getting out to stupid shots.
chrissafc
personally think collingwood is on very thin ice
dalesgirl
Well he should be playing. Just cos you don't like him doesn't say he can't be picked.
Sir gareth
Everybody knws u would
via SMS
Brandonia: Hard to argue with that. Knows his cricket does Tim.
christoff
i agree dalesgirl and was player of the season for the most of last year
chrissafc
he said it appears some players are taking no notice of the coaching as he believes the coaches will be coaching about discipline. he also said changes are needed
dalesgirl
I would Sir Gareth. He's done no worse than other players who keep their place failure after failure
via SMS
Brandonia: What was his crack like chrissafc?
christoff
he needs the rest nearly 39 now
Sir gareth
I certainly wouldn't play gordon in 4 day cricket nt good enough
chrissafc
tim wellock didnt have much good to say on radio newcastle at around 5.40pm
Somerset 138-5
Buttler caught Harmison off Blackwell for 7*. Somerset 138-5!
6:13pm
via SMS
Brandonia: On an semi-related note, why do we never pick Diva in 40 overs?
christoff
ok yes it is a different game in regard to fielding restrictions but if your in form in one you can play both
chrissafc
will smith with a wicket?
Mark
Gordon has done well in both CB40 games but either Gordon or Rocky had to be left out of this match for Stokes.
via SMS
Brandonia: So why does Mustard open in one day but bat 7 in the Championship? If its the same game?
christoff
no
Mark
Indeed bryn! Worst possible time to play them when we are low on confidence.
via SMS
Brandonia: Completely different game though. Surely you have to admit that?
christoff
Muchall has score 75 and 41 in cb40
bryn
Gonna be a tense atmosphere on Sunday v the bravehearts
dalesgirl
I was on about the CB40 game
Bowling change
Ian Blackwell returns, at the Old Pavilion End. Somerset 129-4 - they need 23 to win.
6:07pm
christoff
For me Harmison and Plunkett are fringe players who got a game because of others not available, they did not do enough to retain there place
marchy22
You can't drop either. Any Bowlers struggle at taunton unless you are bowling against our batters
via SMS
Brandonia: 16 & 14. I wouldn't call that a good game daleslass
Mark
Gordon was dropped because Stokes was fit. Muchall & Stoneman are both decent players but if either of them plays whoever it is should be given a proper run in the side and that's why I'd keep Rocky in.
via SMS
Brandonia: How many runs did he score?
Mark
On current form yes christoff but wouldn't it be a mistake to leave both Harmy & Plunkett out after 1 game? Pitches at our place are generally more bowler friendly.
dalesgirl
Gordon had a good game against Somerset then he gets dropped. Why ? He did nothing wrong.
christoff
Claydon 3rd Thorp 4th for me
Mark
If Onions isn't playing in the test he'd obviously be the first automatic bowling choice and Jamie Harrison would be the second.
via SMS
Brandonia: Nah, no Muchall. I'd actually be tempted to stick Colly at 3. I'd prefer an overseas at 3 though!
Smith strikes!
Somerset 129-4, Suppiah is out lbw to Smith for 73!
6:03pm
dalesgirl
I'd swap Stoneman for Muchall
via SMS
d fielding swung it for me.
via SMS
Brandonia: For me it's because Thorp has been poor this season, I'd give the new ball to Harrison and Onions. Then Plunkett could come on. His batting an
christoff
Claydon and Onions in for Plunkett and Harmison for me, maybe Muchall in for Stoneman/Collingwood
Mark
For me Chris it would be unfair on Thorp but either Harmy or Plunkett has to play. No point in dropping both of them after one game.
Mark
I'd go for Diva, Smith, Stoneman, Stokes, Colly, Richardson, Mustard, Borthwick, Harrison, Onions, Harmy/Plunkett
christoff
Why is everyone going for Plunkett in place of Thorp??
Update
Somerset 119-3, they need only 33 runs to take the win.
5:59pm
via SMS
Brandonia: That was me by the way.
via SMS
der slot, can field too.
via SMS
I'd actually think about Plunkett for Thorp with Harrison and Onions the new ball men. Whereas Borthwick for me is a must, even just to fill the all roun
dalesgirl
Well done Harmy.
marchy22
Nice one harmy
Wicket!
Somerset 100-3 after 26 overs. Hildreth is caught by Thorp off Harmison for 31!
5:51pm
marchy22
I'd go for that but have harmy and plunket in for borthwick and Thorpe
Latest
Somerset 97-2, in the 26th over, 55 runs required.
5:48pm
marchy22
They must just want him to chuck a few up there to get hit out the ground
via SMS
ustard, Thorp, Harrison, Onions. Won't be though.
via SMS
Brandonia: Aye, I'd want to come home tonight too in fairness. My team for Lancs would be Diva, Smith, Colly, Stokes, Blackwell, Borthwick, Richardson, M
dalesgirl
Smith !!
Update
Somerset need 60 to win, they are currently 91-2, Will Smith comes on at the River End.
5:43pm
marchy22
Who though. The owners? Cook? Mustard?
BrianT
Those who are in charge.
Bowling change
Stephen Harmison comes on at the Old Pavilion End - come on Durham!
5:36pm
marchy22
Who do u mean by these though
BrianT
I mean I don't care anymore with these in charge. Plain English with no spelling mistakes or double meanings.
Suppiah 50
Fifty for Suppiah - Somerset 88-2 in the 22nd over.
5:35pm
marchy22
What do u mean Brian
Sir gareth
I thnk they should at least give harmy or pudsey a couple of overs to see if they could get a wicket
BrianT
Don't care anymore with these in charge.
marchy22
What would everyone's team be for lancs next week
BrianT
Can't believe there's a baseball match on BBC. The world's gone mad!
Sir gareth
Mustard must nt have faith in harmy if he hasn't gave him the new ball
Mark
Yes, if there's a chance of getting it over with tonight might as well take it.
marchy22
Id be very surprised they didn't play the extra half hour
Latest
Somerset 66-2 after 19.1 overs, 18 overs remain after this one, they are 86 runs behind.
5:26pm
Sir gareth
How many overs are left today anybody know
Mark
Although having said that I'd very surprised Harmy hasn't bowled at the start of this innings. I'd have given him a cpl of overs with the new ball just to see what happened.
marchy22
He should be giving better interviews. Us the fans deserve it instead of meaningless chat
Mark
But there's no point in making drastic changes-hopefully we'll have Onions back next week and Richardson might be considered. Borthwick will also be recalled sooner than later. Plunkett & Harmison can't be judged too harshly after one game back on an unresponsive pitch.
marchy22
Mark they have had a chance we are a THIRD of the way through the season. Wake up and smell the coffee
via SMS
Brandonia: Aye, you might be right bryn. I might call round and see if he can knock me some discount off 6 bottles of Desperados. Back to the cricket - M
via SMS
archy is right. Action needed NOW.
Mark
I bet there's a big difference between what Geoff says to the press and what he says to the players behind closed doors!
marchy22
I haven't been impressed with cooks interviews this seasons. Seems to avoid Whats happening. He will proably do the same and diverse talking about the loss by talking about Harrison
Mark
I'm not being complacent but the team is full of top quality players and I'd be surprised if they don't put things right soon. It'd be wrong to have blind faith in them but imo they need to be given a chance to turn things around. That's not to say changes shouldn't be made-Richardson for example could come in.
bryn
Brands,I hear norm has got a part time gig down at Barrys bargain store which is obviously a wifi free zone!
marchy22
About time people started agreeing with what I'm saying. There is no time left now. It has to be fixed now
myboyharry
Mark, Marchy is right. Its time to stop the excuses and realise that things arent right. If nothing changes within the team then nothing will change with the results. there is obviously something wrong and it needs to be fixed or we will go down. Its not a popular message but it is the right message. We are playing very poorly and are bottom of the table for a reason.
Mark
dalesgirl-you're probably right but I just don't think we should panic and make drastic changes.
Mark
And to be fair to them tvbc this is the first match that we've played in good batting conditions so it's not as if the batters have been failing again and again on good pitches.
dalesgirl
mark I think a rethink is needed now before anymore matches.
Tynevalleyblackcat
We all know they can do it but they actually need to go out there and get it done rather than talking about it.
marchy22
This is what people keep saying let's see after the next two matches. Those blinded like that won't realise we are deep trouble till there isn't two mire matches left
Tynevalleyblackcat
We just need to find some some form. We have had debates on here about players being out of form before, but at the moment its pretty much everybody when we are batting.
Mark
It's a worrying time marchy but no need to panic yet. Even if it goes wrong in the next 2 games we will still have time to turn it around although if we do lose them both(and I do not expect we will) a rethink might be needed
dalesgirl
Much as I have faith in the team if we loose this one I think there could be a real chance of a relegation battle
Somerset 50
Somerset 50-2 after 13.2 overs.
5:07pm
marchy22
Lancs looking good to.beat middlesex. How long till people realise we are facing relegation. Yous are all saying wait till after the next two matches. We will be half way through the season by then
marchy22
Six off blackwell
via SMS
Brandonia: We need a hat-trick. Where's Norm at btw?
Tom87
@keenasmustard whip-round?
Mark
We must also be very close to the salary cap so even if the money was available we might not be able to use it
Update
Change of bowling at the Old Pavilion End, Callum Thorp. Somerset 41-2 after 11 overs.
4:57pm
keenasmustard
I dont think we can afford an o/seas player for the CC.
via SMS
Brandonia: Two defeats to Lancs and Warks and it could be too late.
christoff
We have not played Lancs and Worcester yet, we will beat them because we are better than them so relegation is not even an issue in my eyes
Mark
...although despite the awful start I would be v surprised if we get into a real end of season relegation battle.
chrissafc
we're bottom of the league for a reason.
chrissafc
which like it or lump it, is very possible and it pains me to say that.
Mark
If we go OK in the next couple of CC games(Lancs & Warwickshire) then no need to think about bringing someone in but if things don't go well it has to be worth considering.
dalesgirl
I still can't forgive Shiv for that T20 performance
via SMS
Brandonia: Bang on chrissafc.
chrissafc
@christoff - to avoid relegation
Mark
To be fair I think the t20 players don't count towards the salary cap so even if we had the money to get someone for the CC we might not be able to. I could be wrong about that though.
Sir gareth
I would love it because he was awesome at durham
christoff
What would be the point of paying someone for a couple of games to finish maybe mid table?
via SMS
Brandonia: He'd be immense but I think the money men would rather have a slogger for t20.
Mark
I'd be happy with that!
Sir gareth
People know what it would be when england finish playing windies could we sign the little genius chanderpaul
Mark
What would you q be Sir G?
Update
Somerset 35-2 after 9 overs. Wowzer...there is no air in this press box at all - bloomin' hot! If the posts stop it is because I have melted!
4:50pm
Sir gareth
Dnt thnk il attend because my question wouldn't be appreciated
Smith
It was a tough chance - would've been massively impressive to hold on to it. Keep the faith!
4:47pm
marchy22
That's all we need people dripping catches
Update
Somerset 30-2 after 8 overs.
4:46pm
chrissafc
yeah i'll be in attendance
via SMS
Brandonia: Smith drops Hildreth.
Mark
That first one could be interesting chris-I just hope our form has improved by then or it could be a heated debate!
chrissafc
cant make the 27th july one as sunderland are playing hartlepool on the night
chrissafc
thanks very much
Mark
It's in the 'Around the Wicket' magazine chris Q&A's close of play on 6th June(Warwickshire), 27th July(Middlesex) and 12th Sep (Sussex)
Sir gareth
We could have dne with scotty today on this pitch
chrissafc
has that been announced mark?
Mark
Members q&a session after day 2 of the Warwickshire game might be interesting! Although a miraculous win here would cheer everyone up no end
Noz
Marchy, just in case you're wondering, I'm not Geoff Cook masquerading as someone else!! :)
Tynevalleyblackcat
Marchy - we don't want to know what your preferred method of relief is!!
dalesgirl
Well bowled Blackie !
chrissafc
haway durham
Wicket!
Compton caught by Colly off Blackwell for 8. Somerset 17-2. Come on Durham!
4:30pm
BrianT
17 for 2. Not so easy is it?
Mark
Marvellous!
Tynevalleyblackcat
2 DOWN
chrissafc
a lot of those runs were vs cardiff uni i believe
Stan Drop
Compton needs 67 to be the first to score 1 000 runs before the end of May since graham Hick twenty odd years ago. Pressure's on him.
christoff
Just got back, what a disaster :-(
Mark
I read he'll be out for another 2-3 weeks
marchy22
No he won't
raydetmold
Blackwell opening the bowling ? , as if it couldnt get any worse
via SMS
Brandonia: Will Benk be fit for next week?
Mark
Harrison has been superb, at least there's going to be one huge positive from the match.
marchy22
I thought the conditions were perfect for swing bowling, obviously not
marchy22
Omg they are actually opening with Blackwell
chrissafc
*also not always
chrissafc
always remember harrison got 35 runs with the bat
Stan Drop
Yes Mark, chasing a low target often puts surprising prssure on a team. Brilliant dayboo from jamie!
Update
Somerset 7-1 after the first over. Blackwell to bowl from the River End.
4:21pm
marchy22
Noz will want Blackwell opening the bowling
via SMS
Brandonia: You're joking Marchy, they put on 99 for the 7th wicket yesterday. I'll start believing when they're 80-9
Mark
There's always a chance Marchy, not much of one but if we can somehow have them 3 or 4 down for under 50 you just never know.
marchy22
Believing
marchy22
I'll start relieving when they are 50-6
Mark
Excellent, well done(again) Jamie!
keenasmustard
Well you can't ask for a better start than that.
marchy22
Good start but the total is so below par its a joke
dalesgirl
Well done that man !!
marchy22
Relegation should have been on evryones mind already. We are a third of the way through the season now with no victories and poor performances to boot
chrissafc
good start
Wicket!
Harrison strikes first ball!! Somerset 0-1.
4:14pm
Update
Jamie Harrison opens the bowling..Alex Barrow is facing.
4:14pm
dalesgirl
We can win this
Come on Durham!
Here we go! Quick wickets please!
4:12pm
dalesgirl
I'd keep Blackwell and drop Scotty
via SMS
I think its time to start worrying about relegation.
marchy22
Blackwell won't get dropped cos he bowls too
Tea
Tea is being taken now I believe...
4:05pm
chrissafc
what time is tea?
Mark
One or two changes sounds right to me and Richardson for Blackwell is definitely possible. Suppose there's about a one in a thousand chance of winning this-we're at least 150 short but stranger things have happened.
marchy22
We will get two wickets tops
BrianT
I'll bet you a Brownie 127 we don't.
dalesgirl
We can if all our bowlers fire
Durham post 167
Durham post a second innings total of 167 - we need to defend 152.
3:54pm
Noz
167 ao
keenasmustard
A bit of flippancy Brian. Tongue in cheek. Having said that, it may be time to make one or two changes for the Lancashire game to freshen things up.
Noz
all out
chrissafc
harrison on 20 here
Sir gareth
I agree to brian t
BrianT
Keenas: So why the comment about golf handicaps?
dalesgirl
I agree to Brian.
keenasmustard
There's no doubt they are trying their best. It's just that their best isn't good enough and everyone is rolling us over.
chrissafc
agreed brian
BrianT
Any suggestion that they are not trying their best is out of order.
marchy22
Since 69-1 we are 89-8
marchy22
Richardson won't replace Blackwell
keenasmustard
Some of our boys must be wanting to improve their golf handicap tomorrow.
BrianT
Wondered why they were so keen to declare once they'd got the 5th batting point. Skulduggery I reckon.
Stan Drop
Murky, swing favourable conditions don't help Dockrell.
chrissafc
got to give dockrell some credit. good effort to get 5 wickets
dalesgirl
I think Richardson should be in the team for Sunday.
Durham nine down
Durham 158-9 - Colly is caught by Hildreth off Dockrell for 32.
3:38pm
Noz
158-9 Colly gone
Noz
Dockrell 5fer
Mark
It is painful Sir Gareth! I just hope it's a lot better next week.
keenasmustard
Richardson for Blackwell for the Lancs game. Nailed on.
Stan Drop
Six fours in three overs.
chrissafc
i think i'm not alone in hoping to see wood/richardson get a game on sunday. few others maybe?
Sir gareth
I wasn't talking to u dalesgirl I was having a joke with mark on here
chrissafc
Harrison has been a major positive in this game mind.
Noz
156-8 Colly and Harrison have both hit 2 4s each in teh last few balls
chrissafc
thats an open question for everyone, curious as to what people think
Stan Drop
"Back" , I meant
Durham 150
Durham 152-8 after 45.1 overs, Colly 32* and Harrison 8*.
3:35pm
keenasmustard
Drop the lot of them. Every single one.
marchy22
Well let's declare and use the bowling friendly conditions before its sunny for their innings
chrissafc
hopefully we can do something when we bowl. will be interesting to see the squad selection for sunday. do we give the likes of richardson/jennings/wood etc a game or do we keep with the usual lot and give them a chance to get some confidence?
dalesgirl
Nice to see you having faith in the boys as usual Sir Gareth
Stan Drop
Omigod! I turn my byck for a few minutes and what happens? haway colly, think "Cardiff", think "Centurion". Harr/mison for Onions and Monty parts.
Sir gareth
Yeah it is
Update
The conditions are great to be bowling in, it's hazy, muggy and very warm. Hold on to some faith people - if we end up bowling this aft then I think our bowlers will get results!
3:32pm
myboyharry
I'm lost for words.
Mark
Not that bad surely Sir gareth!
marchy22
More like time for cook to step aside
Sir gareth
This is lyk watching yorkshire
SuperBenks
Time for Cook to make some hard calls and drop a few of the established pros.
Update
Durham 136-8 after 43.5 overs.
3:28pm
keenasmustard
Whatever is going on in that dressing room it needs to be sorted.
via SMS
What's the point of second team cricket if the lads in form can't get a chance in the firsts?
Noz
Im not saying I fancy us to win marchy, we'll need at least another 50 -100 to have any kind of chance, but if we can get a wicket or 2 early and out them under a bit of pressure then you never know. Big innings for Colly this now
chrissafc
we were 158-1 48 hours ago
Ed Syers
It's not just poor, it's pathetic. They're clearly good players, yet this seems to happen every week.
chrissafc
131 (42.4 overs)
dalesgirl
I'm trying hard to be positive but its becoming harder.
chrissafc
very very poor. i gave them credit 1st innings and i gave them credit earlier today but this is very very poor
SuperBenks
Too many of this team are believing their own hype
marchy22
Well if u fancy Blackwell spinning us to victory noz ill give you odds a million to 1 for the Durham win
Tynevalleyblackcat
If we did not already know, we are in a relegation battle now. Lets hope the lads can get their heads round that and start playing somewhere near their true abilities.
raydetmold
dear oh dear oh dear
Wicket...
Thorp is caught by Overton off Dockrell. Durham 131-8.
3:22pm
chrissafc
dear me
Noz
Thorp out - 4 wickets down without scoring
dalesgirl
Its like Groundhog day
Noz
marchy - Dockrell has 3-16 from 7 overs - why cant Blackwell do that or better???
marchy22
The players must be fancying an extra day off again. Must be getting to them all this effort they put in
Sir gareth
How many overs left today please
keenasmustard
I've never seen a season start like this since the days of Mike Roseberry.
Tom87
what a joke, same old story.
Durham 131-7
Plunkett is caught by Overton off Dockrell. Durham 131-7.
3:15pm
marchy22
Yeah cos Blackwell is going to spin Somerset out for a 100
Tynevalleyblackcat
Oh Dear!!
Noz
Plunkett gone
Noz
Comms said bit more help for left arm spinner. Will be useful for Blackie
chrissafc
dear me
Six down
Durham 131-6 as Mustard is caught by Barrow off Dockrell. Plunkett joins Colly (19*)
3:12pm
Noz
Mustard out
raydetmold
Good cameo, but we needed this partnership to go through till tea. Blacky cannot continue batting at 6 if he throws his wicket away. give me strength hes got us back into the game with a strike rate in the 90s
marchy22
At least Blackwell got out being positive and not like the rest playing negatively
via SMS
Brandonia: Can't afford anymore wickets down before Tea like.
stuartp
"keenasmustard: Rhodes if you want to see the Muppets visit the Members Lounge sometime. " Beaker reporting for duty here :)
stemc
Good cameo, but we needed this partnership to go through till tea. Blacky cannot continue batting at 6 if he throws his wicket away.
chrissafc
big wicket that
keenasmustard
Looks like Blackie got too overconfident.

Blacky getting carried away again.

Colly hit 3 4s in the last over and Blackie just hit a HUGE 6
Tynevalleyblackcat
Runs are important here. One good partnership and the game is back to even. Colly seems to be finding a bit of form.
Partnership 50
Fifty partnership for Colly 19* and Blackwell 28*. Durham 121-4.
3:02pm
keenasmustard
Rhodes if you want to see the Muppets visit the Members Lounge sometime.
stemc
Lead over 100..
marchy22
Colly just dropped in.the slips
Rhodes
I feel I have intruded on an episode off the Muppets with the two old guys in the theatre box. There's plenty time for good things to happen!
raydetmold
we only have a chance of making it interesting because Blackie is prepared to hit the ball and score some runs
Sir gareth
I only went to william hill and we were 2nd faves there I didn't check every bookmaker chris mate
keenasmustard
Yeah its a 4 day game not T20
stuartp
Don't care if Colly is scoring slowly, he's still there and batting himself into some form. If he is still there tonight we have a real chance of making this interessting.

Colly going at a rate of knots not

Ironically a poor'ish batting performance now gives Durham a better chance or winning rather than the game heading for a draw. We do need a good partnershop or two and then who knows.

Think we were favourites. We're not down yet as well, Lancs in the clarts, as are Worcs. Bit pessimistic to be thinking of relegation yet.

You cant now see any other result but another Durham defeat, which is not only disappointing but worrying considering the talent at our disposal. I am surprised that the Durham hierarchy haven't done anything about it by now but I think that this is only a matter of time. If we don't start to win cricket matches we will go down. That's not being negative that's plainly fact.
Sir gareth
We just have to try and bat all day today and into tomorrow

TAUNTON WEATHER Humidity, visibility and pressure Today A fine and dry day with plenty of sunny spells.YEP I BET ITS SWINGING ABOUT ALL OVER THE PLACE
marchy22
We couldn't polish off their tail so its hardly swinging much. Just the batsmen went into their shells and the pressure hasz told. Joke
Tom87
It will be all sun and no clouds for their 2nd innings knowing our luck.
stemc
Yep but if the ball is swinging all over the place, scoring might be harder than the last 2 days. Just need to be patient, 150+ might be defendable if it's swinging..
marchy22
Spot on ray. The batsmen negativity has started the all to familiar domino affect
raydetmold
only positive cricket will ever get positive results , i know its not a one day game , but this is what happens with negative cricket , the pressure builds up and the wickets start to fall
Tynevalleyblackcat
Not sure its time to throw in the towel already, but I do think the title is out of the question. We have shown no form at all so far this season, pretty much across the board.

I think it's a bit rich blaming an opener for playing out a couple of overs. I'd settle for a Smith 100 off 200 balls. rather 20 and out of 20 balls.
stemc
Do you think he's not trying to score?
raydetmold
all Smith is doing by playing 12 dot balls in succesion is building up the pressure , pointless

DCCCLiz
The first game this season that they require 2 spinners and they drop Scott, bizzare!
Mark
If it comes down to it I'd do more than dangle a carrot-for me a chance will have to be taken and if we do it and lose I for one won't be critical.

Commentary team: Not a pitch for pace or bounce. Poor old harmy.
stemc
If we can get a decent total, then scoreboard pressure is there. Say 280 lead by the end of the day, for 3/4, then a quick 15 over bash to make the game safe, but dangle the carrot to the Cidermen. Blacky did well yesterday, he might prove a match winner.
Sir gareth
Thnk we wil win by 42 runs trma at half 5
Tristan
Tynevalleyblackcat: would you be showing such confidence in our attack considering harrison is making his debut and harmison & plunkett are very slow to shake the rust off
Tristan
The declaration is an attacking decision, they obviously have a lot of confidence in there ability to bat last on this pitch, fair play to them. Hope they regret it come day four :)
Mark
Agreed Tristan. I still think we can finish in the top3.
Tynevalleyblackcat
I can see the sense in the declaration. Shows confidence in their bowlers and is a positive move. Perhaps we could learn something there?
Tristan
Ridgeley: Don't mistake a healthy debate about form for a lack of support
raydetmold
Declaration , crazy decision with 2 full days left , done us a huge favour , what if that last wicket had put on 40 or 50 , could of had us well under pressure
christoff
Declaration makes sense to me, to win they have to bowl us out and the sooner they start the better

Without meaning to sound defeatist the ridiculous CB40 format means you're effectively out of the competition if you lose a couple of games so there may be some 'dead' games coming up where we can experiment with the team. Just to clarify-I do not expect we are going to lose, especially not against Scotland!

Declaration!!
Tristan
problem is we have too many nearly good enough players and not enough match winners.jennings, richardson, wood deserve a game, as does borthwick, claydon, brathwaite, plunkett, where does that leave all the others? we have about 15-20 players in need of a decent spell of games to find form
Mark
Good one!
Tristan
Doesnt being South African entitle you to play for England these days?
Mark
What's Jennings' status? I assume he must be England qualified if he's playing in the Academy but he was the SA U19 captain.
Tristan
It's impressive IF we've restricted them to a score around ours [still one wicke to take mind] but as ever the edge is taken off it as its dissapointing given the score we coudl have got them out for but for some poor bowling from plunkett & harmy
dalesgirl
I'd give Michael Richardson a go in the first team at some point. He's in form with the bat.
chrissafc
jennings, wood and richardson - play them on sunday
Mark
Didn't Jennings also take 4 wickets in the one day game where he also scored a century?
Tristan
207* at nearly a run a ball, massively impressive knock from the young saffa. wood should get a run out anarl
Mark
Yes I remember that season when Plunkett averaged over 40. He just looks like a proper batsman to me.
raydetmold
i think Plunkett is a better batsman than he gets credit for
Sir gareth
Dalesgirl I would play young keaton jennings ths sunday if gareth is unfit
Mark
Always difficult to know how good/bad a score is without being there but-according to the newspaper reports-both sides have been guilty of careless batting and some loose bowling. We should have got close to if not beyond 500 and it's slightly disappointing Somerset have recovered from being 6 down for just obver 200.
stemc
Plunkett is still young enough to come good, I think he should be a shoe in for the 40 overs, 20/20. But we can only afford one bowler who's expensive at the moment and I think harmy has to be given the chance as he's not going to do owt for the one dayers and well we're paying him enough!
Tristan
Mark: was it the year before last [maybe the one before that] he average 44 in the cc, then followed it up average 10 or 11. he showed all rounder promise for one season but cant see him batting as high as 6 or 7 ever
chrissafc
stop them from getting 400 and give it a good go today with the bat
chrissafc
will smith even said its a par 450 wicket. durham deserve a bit of credit in my opinion as somerset are lethal with the bat
Tristan
@stemc: yes plunkett is leaking runs. you said pick harmison instead, they are both leaking runs!!
Mark
Yes Tristan that's the other way of looking at it. If it came down to a choice between Harmy & Liam for the next CC match I'd stick with Harmy and keep Liam in for the one dayers. Plunkett is a very good batsman, I sometimes think he might even be capable of playing as a number 6/7.
stemc
although not that many more than harmy i guess..
Sir gareth
I agree with u chris this is usually a 500 plus wicket mate
Tristan
its not a massive total, imagine if we had onions & davies playing instead of harmy & puds. seen davies bowled 14 overs for 23 runs for kent yesterday. cracking time for him down in kent
Tom87
Morning all, good stuff from Harrison like, aye ya probs right Chris its not a bad effort really.
stemc
But he's leaking too many runs.
Tristan
stemc: plunkett has bowled a few decent games in the pro40 this year, plus he is a fairly decent bat
chrissafc
just me who thinks we have done well to get them restricted to this score?
Tristan
morning marchy
stemc
I think out of the two, persist with Harmy. If he clicks, I still think he's got a decent haul or two in him.
Tristan
Mark: Or how little faith he has in harmy & puds
Mark
Harrison definitely should stay-very promising start and also with an ageing team we need to give a youngster a proper run in the side. Opening the bowling in his first match shows how much faith Mustard has in him.
marchy22
Why not. This is a good effort on a batting paradise
christoff
Good stuff Harra now get your Michelle!!!
Tristan
morning raymondo
raydetmold
Good morning everybody from a glorious sunny Germany , vital wicket that one.
Tristan
unless plunkett & harmison get back some form, if harrison hadn't had an impressive debut we would be looking at a declaration here
stemc
good work, he's staying in the team then..
Tristan
surely harrison cannot be dropped now, but we cant stick with this attack
Harrison strikes!

Tynevalleyblackcat
Just one more quickly and the lead will be negligible.
Tynevalleyblackcat
Well done again Harrison.
christoff

dalesgirl
I'd pick Claydon. He's not had a bad start to the season
Update
Somerset just extend a lead...by 5 runs.
11:21am
Mark
Wouldn't it be to unfair to drop them both after just one game? Harmy usually takes time to get into form and Plunket thas done very well in the one day games-bowled accurately. It would be a huge risk and unfair on Callum but I agree with Sir Gareth.
dalesgirl
If Gareth isn't fit who will replace him ?
christoff
No body has mentioned Claydon, he is our second leading wicket taker just behind Onions
Sir gareth
Mark thnk they would leave thorp ov mate
Tristan
*their
Tristan
Mark: i would keep harrison, and bring in onions and either borthwick or brathwaite, droppping both hamry & pudsy, unless they buck there ideas up
Sir gareth
He has had over a hundred games he just aint a top class player
Ed Syers
On the bright side, it looks like a good batting wicket. No reason why we can't get 400.
Tristan
boom boom
dalesgirl
I'd give Gordon a decent run in the side and not drop him after one game.
Mark
Another puzzler will be who to leave out if Onions is available for the next match. Harmison & Plunkett can't be judged too harshly after one game back on a flat pitch and Harrison deserves to keep his place so who do we leave out?
keenasmustard
Is it true that bowlers at Durham CCC are not allowed to keep dogs or cats because they are no good with anything with a tail?
Tristan
If i was Brathwaite i would be wondering what exactly i have to do to get in the side

Brandonia: Batting to save the draw now. Dreadful start.
Tristan
agreed, that will come with practise and batting 3 should give him more of that, with the added responsibility of having to stick around
Mark
Tristan-He is good enough to bat 3 but will maybe need to tighten up his defence a bit. That's not a criticism, he's still young and learning but he does often get out to careless shots.
dalesgirl
If Gordon had been in the team he'd be the one dropped. He always is.
via SMS
Brandonia: Awful start.
Tristan
Mark: i think stokes is being groomed for the number 3, iirc he was used there a few times last year
Tristan
I agree, benks may be kept back for use in one day matches, doubt we will play him in every format, and as he is captaining the one day side..
Mark
Probably depends on how thing go in the next few games-don't think Benks will play in the 2 matches before t20. Probably Stoneman but Colly & Blackie both need runs and Rocky is probably the most suited to bat at 3 so that;s in his favour
Tristan
hard to say when everyone is out of form

Mark
Question is who will open the bowling? Harrison & Thorp?
Sir gareth
Tristan cricinfo is wrong he has played over 50 ipl games against top players
Mark
Trego is a destructive batsman and Gregory is no mug with the bat either. Overton's cameo yesterday probably shouldn't have been a surprise-he came in before Alfonso Thomas and Alf has made 2 FC hundreds and about 10 50's. So it's not as if we were bowling to genuine tail enders

dalesgirl
Feel free to say hello christoff
Mark
I see this game slightly differently to some-we've had an awful start(and I've consistently said I do not blame the batsmen for struggling in awful conditions) but we still need to look towards the top of the table. If we draw or lose this it might be time to get worried but a top 3 finish should still be our goal. If Warwickshire happen to slip up(unlikely) who knows what could happen?
BrianT
Tristan: can't remember but there were no nice bits in it. Not a bad cricketer but not England class. I could listen to David Lloyd all day long.

80 overs sounds about right to me sir garath, if we had a lead of 400 that would be 5 an over which I'm sure we could defend, Its just wether we can get a lead of 400, fingers crossed
Tristan
@BrianT: any chance the gist of it was 'Nick Knight is a dullard' ?
Ed Syers
Unless the pitch tears up, tomorrow is likely to favour the batters. We'll need a hefty total and make absolutely sure we can't lose.
BrianT
Have just written a long piece about Nick Knight and was then advised my login was not recognised. Not going to retype it so that's your loss!
Sir gareth
Christoff would u agree with my 80 overs left or not
christoff
Agreed that the batting them out of the game discussion is probably irrelevant, I just think we need every single point we can get (we are still bottom after all)and first task is make sure we don't lose and then see if we can win from there
Sir gareth
Na they covering the daft test match tristan

Id bat sensibily til tea then attack til there is 80 overs left to try bowl them out tmra cnt leave them too many overs incase harmy or pudsey are too expensive
Tristan
I'm guessing 5live will not be playing day 4 of our match tomorrow. :(
Mark
I just think we desperately need to win and if that means risking defeat I'd go for it. I wouldn't be too bothered about dropping 3 points if we get beat. Trying to bat them out of the game would imo take up too much time. However, the chances are we will get bowled out in any case!

@Mark, don't quite agree I would bat them out the game (if we can) and then bowl at them with nothing to lose attacking fields etc and them with nothing to play for but 3 points

Morning. Crunch time today, need the last 2 wkts quickly and then get a lead of at least 300 asap. Somerset probably cinfident of chasing anything around 350 in last innings but this is a must win game for us so we'll have to take a chance. Better to have a go and lose rather than bat too long and settle for 3 draw points.
