Day two round up - Durham v Sri Lanka A

Scott Borthwick 2011

A maiden first class century for Scott Borthwick and an unbeaten 71 for skipper Gordon Muchall saw Durham post 303 in their first innings, establishing a lead of 100 over the visitors. By the close on day two Sri Lanka A were 184-4.

Durham resumed on 143-1 with Scott Borthwick 70* and Gordon Muchall 11*.

Borthwick and Muchall went on to reach a hundred and fifty respectively in the first session with the young leg-spinner scoring his maiden first class century from 144 deliveries, which included 18 fours and a maximum.

He was dismissed for 101 after he was caught by Malinda Warnapura off Sajeewa Weerakoon with Durham 211-2.

Four wickets fell in 10 balls with Shaminda Eranga claiming three scalps from six including the wickets of the returning Ben Stokes, who was caught behind for 4 and Michael Richardson who was caught at second slip by Lahiru Thirimanne for 1.

Debutant Ben Raine was bowled by Eranga for 4 with Durham 221-5 and at lunch Muchall and Gareth Breese had guided Durham to 252-5 with a lead of 49.

Breese became Sachithra Senanayake’s first victim of the match when he was caught by Dimuth Karunaratne for 38 with Durham leading the Sri Lankans by 71.

Liam Plunkett added five to the Durham total before he was bowled by Senanayake, who then went on to catch Mark Wood (3) off Eranga an over later.

Chris Rushworth was run out by Bhanuka Rajapaksa for 3 and the last man in, Ruel Brathwaite, helped Muchall (71*) extend Durham’s lead to exactly 100 before he fell to the same fate as Breese having contributed nine runs to the home side’s first innings score of 303.

At tea, Sri Lanka A had reduced the deficit to 39 without loss with Warnapura 24* and Thirimanne 36*.

Liam Plunkett picked up wickets in successive overs, firstly trapping Warnapura lbw for 35 and then bowling Thirimanne for 42 as Sri Lanka A fell to 83-2.

Borthwick claimed his first wicket in his fourth over, when Rajapaksha (36) skied the ball to Muchall at backward point, with Sri Lanka A having established a lead of 38.

Breese struck when Rajapaksa (6) was caught by Wood with the visitors 155-4 and 40 minutes of play remaining in the day.

Play was brought to an early close due to bad light but the allocated numbers of overs had been bowled. At the close Sri Lanka A were 184-4 with a lead of 84.
