Team await new batsman

A career best from Mitchell Claydon saw Somerset dismissed for 480 and by the close of play on day two Durham were 150-2 in response after a fifty from Will Smith.

The start on day two was delayed by 45 minutes with four overs lost in the process and with further rain delay xx overs were lost in total over the day.

Somerset were 443-8 after Mitchell Claydon claimed the scalp of Alfonso Thomas who was brilliantly caught at point by Will Smith for 42, handing the seamer his first five-fer for Durham.

Claydon picked up sixth wicket, a career best 6-104 and Durham’s third bowling point when Kartik was caught by Graham Onions at deep fine leg for 43.

Somerset were all out for 480 when Steve Kirby was caught by Michael Di Venuto for Onions 19 and at which point the rain started to fall.

Michael Di Venuto and Will Smith moved Durham to 68-0 when tea was taken after an hour of play with 27 overs remaining upon the return to the field.

Di Venuto was caught by Suppiah off Kirby for 46 shortly after the break followed by Gordon Muchall who became Kirby’s second victim having added 8 before he was caught at third slip by Kartik with Durham 92-2.

Will Smith went on to score fifty from 123 deliveries which included  12 boundaries and was 58* at the close of play with Durham 150-2 and Paul Collingwood 28*.

Durhamccc.co.uk spoke to Phil Mustard at the close of play, “I think we were a little bit disappointed that they got to 480, we missed a couple of chances yesterday. All credit to Thomas and Kartik, they battled well, took a few blows and got their team into a good position.

“Mitch came into this game pretty fresh, we’ve played a few one day games and he’s been bowling well. He ran in and hit the pitch really hard and got the rewards.  It’s always good for a bowler to have overs under his belt and he’s been bowling for the past few weeks in the t20 and CB40 and he’s been the pick of the bowlers.

“Will had a big hundred at Warwickshire a few weeks ago and it’s good to see him getting fifty – he battled well against the new ball and showed what he is capable of.

“Tomorrow is a crucial day – we need to bat out all day and hopefully get a lead and go from there.”
