Mark Stoneman batting 2012
Rain brought play at Arundel to an early close on day one of Durham’s LV= County Championship match against Sussex with the visitors set to resume on 92-4 on Thursday.
Durham lost the toss and were put in to bat first at drizzly Arundel, making conditions difficult for the opening pair.
The visitors were 1-2 in the third over when James Anyon had Will Smith (2) caught in the slips by Michael Yardy and then bowled Gordon Muchall first ball.
Ben Stokes added 20 before he too was caught by Yardy, this time off the bowling of Magoffin as Durham slipped to 34-3.
A much deserved fifty for Mark Stoneman game some impetus to the Durham cause before he was trapped lbw, becoming Anyon’s second victim.
Durham were 92-4 when rain brought about lunch ten minutes earlier than scheduled. With no break in the bad weather play was abandoned for the day at 4.10pm.
At the close of play Durhamccc.co.uk spoke to Mark Stoneman, “With the new ball there was a bit of seam movement but it was just a case of seeing how the pitch was going to play. I needed to assess that and see where I would be likely to score.
“I had to bide my time and wait for the bowlers to finally get sick of bowling where I was able to leave the ball and make it come to me and allow me to play in my area. They bowled very well first up with the new ball, if you weren’t defending, you were leaving it so it was a case of being patient.
“It was frustrating that I got out and I didnt get to bat longer but there’s still a lot of cricket to be played in this game.”
