Durham First Class Debut - September 2015 (vs Nottinghamshire)
2016 was a strong year for Barry McCarthy as the fast bowler forced his way into the reckoning with both county and country.
After an impressive start in the Second XI, Jon Lewis included McCarthy for the visit of Lancashire in mid-May and responded by taking his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.
The seam bowler was first recommended to Durham by Ben Stokes, who faced him in the nets before a One-Day international, and the Irishman made his debut in 2015.
McCarthy’s first full Championship campaign yielded 20 wickets but he also impressed with the bat. In making an unbeaten half-century against Hampshire, the 24-year-old contrived to break one of the Emirates Riverside seats in launching a huge six.
Impressive early season form for Durham also translated into international caps as McCarthy made his Ireland bow against Sri Lanka in June, taking four wickets in two One-Day internationals, before taking two four-wicket hauls against Afghanistan and Pakistan later in the summer.
The bowler penned a two-year deal at the end of last season and even though there is stiff competition in the seam bowling ranks with both Durham & Ireland, McCarthy can be a huge part in the future of both sides.
