It was a no-brainer when Gordon Muchall was offered a new contract at the end of 2015 and the batsman was "over the moon" to put pen to paper.
He once again had to wait until late May before a Championship appearance and it looked as though 'Muchy' would be released come the end of the season, but he reminded Jon Lewis of his capabilities in the middle order and secured a new deal.
Once he retained his spot, he did not let go. Scores of 81* and 115 at Arundel helped his team secure a convincing win over Sussex before a century followed in the game at Hampshire.
An experienced batsman, Muchall complemented his Championship tons with regular performances in the limited-overs fixtures and averaged over 45 in both T20 and 50-over cricket.
Muchall made his first class debut in 2002 and subsequently developed a reputation as a reliable performer who possesses the ability to time a ball beautifully.
A likeable character among supporters, players and officials at the club, Muchall has been coaching young players at his former school in Durham with one eye towards life after cricket.
