Paul Coughlin remains an immensely talented prospect and will play a huge part in the club’s future after penning a new three-year deal at the end of last season.

After the back troubles of previous seasons Jon Lewis managed Coughlin’s workload with care. The 24-year-old only featured in limited-overs ball cricket for the first half of the campaign but still managed to make great strides in his development throughout 2016.

He managed the club’s second hat-trick in T20 cricket in the away game at the Northants Steelbacks with the final three balls of the innings, finishing with figures of 5-42. At the end of the T20 Blast competition, Coughlin had accounted for an impressive 17 wickets in 12 games.

The mid-season match with Sri Lanka ‘A’ also brought about Coughlin’s first captaincy duties as he led the side, including younger brother Josh, into the friendly and he will act as the vice-captain in this season’s One-Day Cup.

And the season finished by racking up 231 in the Second XI final, the club’s second-highest score at that level, to help clinch victory inside three days, while he also picked up the club’s Best Fielder at the Player of the Year dinner.

Coughlin has spent a part of the winter months working on the England Pace Performance Programme, which included training at a warm weather camp in South Africa, and was selected to play in the North-South series.
