Durham First Class Debut - September 2016 (v Somerset)
If 2016 was a make-or-break year for Stuart Poynter, ending it with a new two-year deal proves it was the year he started to turn promising Second XI performances into First XI appearances.
The Irish wicketkeeper piled on the runs for Neil Killeen’s side in the early season and was rewarded with senior showings in the second half of the year, which started by hitting the winning runs in the One-Day Cup match against Warwickshire.
An unbeaten 27 from 13 balls against the Yorkshire Vikings in front of the Sky Sports cameras was another indicator that Poynter was ready for regular First XI action and Jon Lewis handed him a competitive first-class debut in the defeat at Somerset.
He went on to accumulate 119 runs in seven Championship innings but could not pass the half-century mark, with a best of 42 against Nottinghamshire at Emirates Riverside.
Prior to joining Durham, Poynter was previously on the books at Warwickshire & Middlesex, and he is also a regular feature for Ireland at international level.
His score of 36 against Sri Lanka during last summer was his highest to date in One-Day Internationals while he twice passed his T20I career-best at the Desert T20 tournament earlier this year, where Ireland lost to Afghanistan in the final.
