Durham First Class Debut - August 2015 vs Middlesex (H)
Had injuries not hampered James Weighell’s rise for a second consecutive season, the Middlesbrough-born all-rounder could have built upon three highly impressive first-class appearances.
After managing just one wicket in two showings during 2016, Weighell hit the ground running with four consecutive career-best showings within two games.
Following five wickets in his seasonal debut against Lancashire the 23-year-old put in a stellar performance to help overcome Warwickshire at Edgbaston, a ground Durham have traditionally struggled at in the four-day format.
Figures of 4-97 first time around were eclipsed with a maiden first-class five-wicket haul in the second innings as Weighell took 5-33, setting up an unlikely victory after a first innings deficit of 223.
The quick bowler developed a highly effective but unusual style during his outings, coming around the wicket to right-handed batsmen and cramping them for room with accurate bowling.
Injury prevented him from making any appearances after the Nottinghamshire match in late May, though he did return in time to captain the Second XI to Championship glory.
