Speculation around the return of MS Dhoni has intensified after the veteran wicketkeeper-batter was seen practicing in the nets ahead of Chennai Super Kings’ first home game of the Indian Premier League 2026 season against Punjab Kings.

Dhoni, who has been recovering from a calf strain, trained briefly at Chepauk, raising hopes among fans about his availability for the highly anticipated clash.

The 44-year-old recently resumed light training in Chennai after suffering a calf strain that initially ruled him out for at least two weeks of IPL 2026.

During the practice session at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Dhoni spent around 30 minutes facing throwdowns and working on his batting.

While he initially appeared slightly rusty, the CSK legend quickly found his rhythm and unleashed several powerful shots that cleared the boundary with ease.

His presence in the nets immediately sparked excitement among fans hoping to see him in action during CSK’s first home match of the season.

However, Dhoni did not take part in wicketkeeping drills during the session, which has raised questions about whether he is fully match-fit.

CSK Yet to Confirm Dhoni’s Availability

Earlier, CSK confirmed that Dhoni was undergoing rehabilitation and was likely to miss the opening phase of IPL 2026. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad avoided confirming a return date, joking that he would only know the answer “after the 13th day.”

With Dhoni still in recovery, the franchise appears to be taking a cautious approach to avoid aggravating the injury. The team management is prioritising long-term fitness over rushing the veteran back into action.

Will Dhoni Play Against Punjab Kings?

Despite his return to batting practice, Dhoni’s participation in the CSK vs PBKS match remains uncertain. The absence of wicketkeeping practice suggests he may not yet be ready for full match duties.

If he misses the game, CSK will likely continue with alternative wicketkeeping options while Dhoni focuses on regaining complete fitness. For now, his inclusion remains a game-time decision.

Even if he does not feature, Dhoni’s presence around the squad and in training has already boosted morale ahead of the crucial Chepauk encounter.
