The spotlight is firmly on India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir as the T20 World Cup 2026 approaches. Former India batter Manoj Tiwary believes the Board of Control for Cricket in India could take a tough call on Gambhir’s future if India fail to defend their title at home.
While Gambhir’s record in T20 bilateral series remains flawless, recent setbacks in Test and ODI cricket have raised questions. According to Tiwary, the upcoming World Cup is not just another tournament. It could decide whether Gambhir continues as head coach.
T20 World Cup Could Decide Gambhir’s Future
Manoj Tiwary has made it clear that results in the T20 World Cup will matter more than past assurances. Speaking to InsideSport, he said that the BCCI may have no option but to review Gambhir’s position if India do not lift the trophy.
“If India doesn’t win the T20 World Cup, then I think the BCCI should take a big and difficult decision regarding Gautam Gambhir,” Tiwary said.
He also pointed out that although the BCCI secretary has stated Gambhir will continue until his contract ends, tournament outcomes often change situations quickly.
Since taking over as head coach in July 2024, Gambhir has overseen strong performances in T20 internationals. However, India have lost two home Test series against South Africa and New Zealand during this period. The recent ODI series defeat against a depleted New Zealand side has added further pressure.
Tiwary believes these results cannot be ignored. In his view, the T20 World Cup carries extra weight because it is being played on home soil, where expectations are always higher.
Tiwary Suggests VVS Laxman as Ideal Replacement
If the BCCI does decide to move on from Gambhir, Tiwary feels VVS Laxman should be the first name considered. He described Laxman as a natural choice, given his past involvement with the senior men’s team.
“When Rahul Dravid was the coach and did not go on certain tours, VVS Laxman used to go,” Tiwary said. “So he was the natural option.”
He also praised Laxman’s temperament and experience. “He is level-headed, a good human being, and has coaching experience. The BCCI should look to convince him.”
India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands and the USA. Their title defence begins on February 7 at the Wankhede Stadium against the United States. As things stand, the World Cup could shape not only India’s campaign but also the future of their head coach.
