Written By: Ben Crawley

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has reportedly received a major offer from Rajasthan Royals that includes a triple role of CEO, mentor, and a two to three per cent equity stake in the franchise. However, since Gambhir is currently serving as India’s coach during the ongoing T20 World Cup, he cannot accept the offer without stepping down from his national duties.

What Is the Offer on the Table?

According to a report by Dainik Jagran, a majority of Rajasthan Royals shareholders are in the process of selling their stake to new owners. As part of this transition, one of the owners from the new management has reportedly offered Gambhir a two to three per cent stake in the franchise, along with the roles of CEO and mentor. The report also states that the deal is currently in a transferable state.

Can Gambhir Actually Take the Job?

The short answer is no, at least not right now. Gambhir is currently the head coach of the Indian cricket team, and accepting any such role would require him to step down from that position first. That is considered highly unlikely at this stage.

Adding to this, Gambhir’s full focus is on the ongoing T20 World Cup, where India, the defending champions, have already won all three of their group stage matches and secured a place in the Super 8.

Gambhir has a strong track record in the IPL. He has previously been associated with two franchises, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants. During his time with LSG, the team reached the playoffs in both 2023 and 2024. He also served as KKR’s mentor in 2024 before taking over as India’s head coach following Rahul Dravid’s exit.

For now, the Rajasthan Royals offer remains just that, an offer. And Gambhir’s attention, for the foreseeable future, stays firmly on Team India.
