Written By: Ben Crawley

India cricketer Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchand Singh, passed away on Friday, February 27, due to stage-four cancer, just a day after Rinku returned to the team following a brief visit to see his ailing father at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida ahead of India’s crucial T20 World Cup Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe in Chennai.

Rinku Rushed to Hospital Before Zimbabwe Match

Khanchand Singh’s condition worsened earlier in the week while undergoing treatment for stage-four cancer. Rinku immediately traveled from Chennai to Greater Noida to be with his father before the February 26 match against Zimbabwe. Despite the family’s hopes, his father’s condition did not improve, and he had to be placed on ventilator support.

Returned to the squad but didn’t play

Showing tremendous professionalism amid personal tragedy, Rinku returned to Chennai in time for the Zimbabwe match. However, he was not included in the playing XI, with Sanju Samson taking his place in the lineup. Despite not being part of the starting eleven, Rinku participated in the match as a substitute fielder, demonstrating his commitment to the team during an emotionally difficult period.

Father’s Sacrifice Behind Rinku’s Success

Khanchand Singh played a pivotal role in Rinku’s cricketing journey. Working as an LPG cylinder deliveryman in Aligarh, he faced significant financial limitations but ensured Rinku received every possible opportunity to pursue his cricket dreams. His sacrifices helped transform Rinku from humble beginnings into an Indian international.

Cricket Fraternity Offers Condolences

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed his condolences on social media, writing: “Pained to learn about the demise of Shri Khanchand Singh Ji, father of Rinku Singh. This must be an especially difficult time for Rinku and his family, even as he remains committed to his responsibilities during the T20 World Cup. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones.”

The entire cricket fraternity has rallied around Rinku during this devastating loss, offering support and prayers for his family.
