England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from IPL 2026 just four days before the season begins. The 31 year old left hander announced the decision on Instagram on Tuesday. He cited the need to be physically and mentally ready for England’s Test summer.

Delhi Capitals signed Duckett for INR 2 crore at the mini auction last year. His late pullout now puts him at risk of a two-year IPL ban under rules the governing council introduced in 2024. DC previously lost Harry Brook in an identical fashion.

Why Did Ben Duckett Pull Out of IPL 2026

Duckett called, representing England is his childhood dream and top priority. He wants to play County Championship cricket for Nottinghamshire before the Test series against New Zealand.

The Championship starts on April 3. Duckett believes scoring runs in four-day cricket gives him the best platform for the international summer.

He made the call entirely on his own. He referenced the heavy time spent away from home over the winter. A poor Ashes campaign weighed on him too.

He managed just 202 runs across five Tests against Australia. A controversy during England’s Noosa trip between the second and third Ashes Tests added further pressure. Duckett now wants to refresh his mind and body before the summer begins.

Duckett Apologises to Delhi Capitals and Fans

Duckett expressed sincere regret for the disruption his withdrawal causes. He said he felt genuinely excited about joining DC.

He acknowledged the time and planning that franchises invest in squad building. He also directed a separate apology to Delhi fans for letting them down so close to the start of the season.

Could Duckett Face a Two-Year IPL Ban

The IPL governing council introduced a strict rule in 2024 targeting last-minute overseas pullouts. Any overseas player who registers for the auction and withdraws after selection faces a two-season ban.

The punishment covers both the tournament and future auctions. Harry Brook received the same ban after pulling out of his Delhi Capitals contract previously.

What This Means for Delhi Capitals

DC lost a potential opening partner for KL Rahul days before the season opener. The franchise already confirmed Rahul as their first-choice opener. Head coach Hemang Badani must now choose between Pathum Nissanka, Abishek Porel, and Prithvi Shaw.

DC also awaits Mitchell Starc’s NOC from Cricket Australia. The franchise faces growing overseas player uncertainty ahead of their April 1 clash against Lucknow Super Giants.
