The Karnataka government has granted permission for IPL 2026 matches to be held at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, ending months of speculation about defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s home ground. The decision, announced on Thursday, comes with strict conditions following the implementation of Justice John Michael D’Cunha’s Report recommendations.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasized that public safety remains paramount. “In the interest of the sport and its fans, the Cabinet has taken this important decision while keeping public safety as the top priority,” he stated. The approval includes stringent norms on ticketing, crowd regulation, and stadium access control.

According to Minister Ramalinga Reddy, the stadium will operate under a reduced capacity of 35,000 spectators, significantly lower than its usual limits. Authorities have stressed that organizers must not oversell tickets and must implement comprehensive safety measures before each match.

The stadium ban was imposed following a tragic stampede on June 4 that claimed 11 lives. The incident occurred when crowds surged into the venue during RCB’s maiden IPL victory celebration, prompting the government to prohibit all sporting activities with spectators until adequate safety protocols were established.

As defending champions, RCB holds the rights to host the IPL 2026 inaugural match, along with Qualifier 2 and the final, as per tournament convention. Cricket enthusiasts in Bengaluru are relieved by the decision, which allows the franchise to play at their iconic home ground.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) received approval not only for IPL matches but also for international fixtures at the venue. However, the final decision on hosting arrangements rests with the RCB franchise.

This development marks a significant step forward for cricket in Karnataka, balancing the passion for the sport with the critical importance of spectator safety and responsible event management.
