CSK to enter WPL in the coming years, as confirmed by CEO Kasi Viswanathan at the Invest in Tamil Nadu conclave. The Chennai-based franchise, one of the most successful teams in IPL history, has announced that women’s cricket will be its primary focus for expansion.

Currently, CSK is one of five IPL franchises without a women’s team. CSK’s eventual entry into the WPL would bring the franchise’s legendary yellow jersey and massive fan following to women’s cricket, potentially transforming the tournament’s reach and appeal.

Viswanathan clarified the expansion won’t happen immediately but confirmed concrete plans to invest in women’s cricket, with potential diversification into other sports in the future.

After four consecutive seasons of the Women’s Premier League without participation, Chennai Super Kings has officially confirmed their intention to enter women’s cricket. CEO Kasi Viswanathan made this significant announcement during the Invest in Tamil Nadu conclave, outlining the franchise’s long-term vision.

“Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women’s cricket. We may also go into other sports over time,” Viswanathan stated when questioned about the franchise’s future plans.

This strategic decision positions women’s cricket as CSK’s primary avenue for expansion, reflecting the growing prominence and commercial viability of the Women’s Premier League in India’s cricket landscape.

WPL Expansion: CSK Among Five IPL Franchises Yet To Enter

The Women’s Premier League currently operates with five teams: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz. Meanwhile, five prominent IPL franchises, including Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, have not yet launched women’s teams.

While Viswanathan emphasized that the expansion timeline remains flexible, confirming women’s cricket as the “first target” signals CSK’s serious commitment to supporting and investing in the women’s game, marking an exciting development for Indian women’s cricket.
