Chennai Super Kings have signed right-arm pacer Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre in IPL 2026. Mhatre has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury. CSK confirmed that Madhwal joins the squad for INR 30 lakh.

Mhatre had made a strong start to the season as a top-order batter, but his injury forced the team to look for reinforcements. CSK have opted to strengthen their bowling unit instead, which has already been impacted by multiple injuries.

Madhwal’s IPL Journey and Key Performances

Akash Madhwal began his IPL journey as a net bowler with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019. He later joined Mumbai Indians in 2022 as a replacement player but did not get a game that season.

His breakthrough came in IPL 2023, where he picked up 14 wickets in 8 matches. One of his standout performances was a 5 for 5 spell against Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator. He followed that with a limited role in 2024, picking up 5 wickets in 5 matches.

In the 2025 auction, Rajasthan Royals secured his services for INR 1.20 crore, but he featured in only four matches before being released. He went unsold in the next auction before CSK brought him in as a replacement.

CSK Address Bowling Concerns Amid Injuries

CSK have faced multiple injury setbacks this season. Nathan Ellis was ruled out before the tournament, while Khaleel Ahmed also suffered an injury during the campaign.

Madhwal’s inclusion adds depth to the pace attack at a crucial stage of the tournament. With key matches ahead, CSK will hope the new signing can provide support and help stabilise their bowling unit.
