India defeated England by 7 runs in the second semi final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It was a high scoring thriller where India posted a huge total of 253 for 7 in 20 overs and managed to defend it despite a strong fight from England.

Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings of 89 from 42 balls to lead India’s batting effort and won the Player of the Match award. England came very close during the chase thanks to a superb century from Jacob Bethell, but India held their nerve in the final overs to secure a place in the final.

First Innings Highlights

India started aggressively but lost Abhishek Sharma early for 9 when he was caught off Will Jacks. After the early wicket, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan built a strong partnership and shifted the momentum towards India.

Samson dominated the innings with clean hitting while Kishan provided quick support with 39 from just 18 balls. Their 97 run stand pushed India past the hundred mark in quick time before Kishan was dismissed by Adil Rashid.

Samson continued his attacking approach and looked set for a century before he was caught at deep cover for 89 off 42 balls. In the final overs, Shivam Dube added 43 from 25 balls while Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma played explosive cameos. Tilak smashed 21 from just 7 balls as India finished with a massive total of 253 for 7 in 20 overs.

Second Innings Highlights

England had a difficult start to the chase as Phil Salt was dismissed on the first ball by Hardik Pandya. Harry Brook and Jos Buttler also fell inside the powerplay, leaving England under pressure early in the innings.

Jacob Bethell then produced a remarkable counterattack. He played an outstanding innings, scoring 105 from 48 balls with eight fours and seven sixes. He also shared important partnerships with Tom Banton and Will Jacks which brought England back into the match.

However, India struck at key moments. Axar Patel dismissed Tom Banton, while Arshdeep Singh removed Will Jacks after a brilliant boundary effort involving Axar Patel and Shivam Dube. Hardik Pandya then took the wicket of Sam Curran in the death overs.

The turning point came in the final over when Bethell was run out for 105 while attempting a desperate second run. Despite a late cameo from Jofra Archer, England finished at 246 for 7, falling short by just 7 runs as India sealed a thrilling victory.
