The ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has opened multiple investigations into alleged corruption involving Canada Cricket, covering a fixture from the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The probe also examines potential breaches of the anti-corruption code across international and domestic cricket linked to the country.

Moreover, the allegations stem from a Canadian investigative documentary titled ‘Corruption, Crime and Cricket’, produced by the Fifth Estate. The programme flagged serious concerns around governance, team selection, and on field conduct. Consequently, the ICC has confirmed awareness of the broadcast and stated that the ACU is examining every credible thread.

A key strand of the ICC investigation focuses on Canada’s T20 World Cup fixture against New Zealand. Specifically, the ACU is examining an over bowled by captain Dilpreet Bajwa that conceded 15 runs. He began the over with a no ball and then delivered a wide down the leg side.

Furthermore, the broader pattern of the innings has drawn attention, including an unusual early switch from pace to spin. Canada exited the tournament without a single group stage win, which has added weight to the questions being raised about tactical decisions.

Leaked Recording Implicates Cricket Canada Board Members

A separate investigation centres on a leaked phone recording involving former head coach Khurram Chohan. In the recording, Chohan alleged that board members pressured him to influence team selection. Additionally, the audio contains claims suggesting attempts to fix matches.

Former coach Pubudu Dassanayake has made similar allegations regarding selection interference. Meanwhile, Dassanayake has also launched legal proceedings against the board over what he describes as wrongful dismissal.

Therefore, the ACU faces a widening evidence base that stretches beyond a single fixture.

Cricket Canada Battles Governance and Financial Turmoil

The corruption probe arrives during a period of deep instability at Cricket Canada. Notably, the board has faced repeated leadership changes and unresolved complaints about delayed player payments. Certain allegations reportedly tied to organised crime fall outside ACU jurisdiction and sit with law enforcement instead.

Andrew Ephgrave, Interim General Manager of the ICC Integrity Unit, outlined the governing body’s position. According to him, the ACU operates across intelligence, prevention and education, and investigation.

He confirmed that these functions run concurrently wherever the integrity of the sport appears to be at risk. However, he added that the ACU cannot comment on the substance of specific allegations while inquiries remain active.
