The US-Iran-Israel tension in West Asia has sparked worries for the smooth running of the IPL 2026. Some overseas cricketers have been delayed en route to India due to the closure of airspace over major transit points such as Dubai and Doha, causing disruption to flying schedules both inward and outward.

However, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has said the tournament will be conducted as planned and defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening match on March 28 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

How the West Asia Conflict Threatens IPL 2026 Travel Plans

Will IPL 2026 be affected by war

The geopolitical tensions have already wreaked havoc on cricket travel. South Africans and West Indians who were part of the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup had their exit from India delayed for more than a week as flights across the region were cancelled.

A franchise source confirmed it will be tough to organise and ensure return flights for the foreign players, with spiralling airfare prices putting additional pressure on team budgets and logistics. Even with those obstacles, leagues are still hopeful about having complete rosters ahead of the season.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kasi Viswanathan, said he was “hopeful” that his foreign recruits, comprising players from the West Indies, South Africa, and others, would join the team before their first match. Other franchises are also keeping a close eye on the developments and working on emergency travel arrangements to ensure the players are not delayed.

BCCI Confirms IPL 2026 Will Proceed on Schedule

Shukla came out to quash speculation about the possibility of the tournament being delayed or cancelled. He also mentioned that BCCI would reveal the schedule for the initial 20 games from March 28 to April 12.
The rest of the schedule will be announced after the ECI announces the dates for the assembly polls in WB, Assam, and TN.

The first phase will take place at 10 venues: Bengaluru, Mumbai, Guwahati, New Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. Four double headers are planned for the duration , with afternoon games starting at 15:30 h IST, and evening matches at 19:30 h IST.

The domestic LPG crisis too has been sparked off by the conflict, prompting the central government to bring in the Essential Commodities Act. Things are still developing in a bigger sense, but the BCCI looks like it is firmly committed to ensuring that the 2026 IPL has a clean start.
