The Indian Premier League started back in 2008, and a total of eight teams participated in the league. Rajasthan Royals won the first-ever edition of the league. The Deccan Chargers won the second season of the league. The team was terminated from the league in 2012 and was replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In 2011, two new teams, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, were introduced in the tournament. Kochi Tuskers lasted only one season, and Pune Warriors withdrew after the 2013 season. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two seasons in 2016 and 2017, and were temporarily replaced by Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions. Both teams made a comeback to the league in 2018.

In 2022, two new teams, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, were introduced in the league. The Titans went on to win the league in their first-ever attempt. Let’s look at the IPL points table of all seasons so far:

Rajasthan Royals finished in first place in 2008 and went on to clinch the trophy. The Shane Warne-led side defeated the Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, by three wickets. CSK had finished in third place.

Punjab Kings (fka Kings XI Punjab) were in second place, while Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils) finished in fourth position. The other four teams, the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Deccan Chargers, were in the next four places respectively.

In 2009, the Deccan Chargers, who finished in last place in 2008, were in fourth place. Royal Challengers Bangalore finished in third position with eight wins in 14 matches. Both teams played the final, which the Chargers won by six runs after posting a total of 143 runs for the loss of six wickets on the board. Delhi Daredevils were in first place and won 10 out of 14 matches. Chennai Super Kings were in second position and won eight out of 14 matches. PBKS, RR, MI, and KKR were in the last four places, respectively.

In 2010, the Mumbai Indians finished in first place in the points table. They faced the Chennai Super Kings in the final. CSK won the match by 22 runs after posting a total of 168 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Deccan Chargers were in second place, while Royal Challengers Bangalore were in fourth position. DC and RCB played the 3rd Place Play-off game, which RCB won by nine wickets. The Chargers got bundled out for 82 runs while batting first.

Apart from introducing two new teams, 2011 also saw the playoffs being played for the first time. The top two teams had two chances of qualifying for the final. RCB and CSK finished in the first two places, respectively.

The two teams faced each other in the final, where CSK made 205 runs for the loss of five wickets. RCB scored 147 runs for the loss of eight wickets, and CSK won the match by 58 runs. They became the first team to win the IPL trophy twice.

In 2012, DC finished in first place, while KKR were in second position. KKR qualified for the final, but DC failed to do so after losing both the qualifiers. CSK, who were in fourth place, faced KKR in the final.

CSK put up a total of 190 runs for the loss of three wickets on the board. KKR took 19.4 overs to reach the target of 191 runs and won the match by five wickets. KKR became the fourth team to win the IPL.

The year 2013 saw the Mumbai Indians lift the IPL trophy for the first time. They finished in second place behind CSK. CSK defeated MI by 48 runs in the first qualifier. MI defeated the Rajasthan Royals in the second qualifier and faced CSK one more time.

In the final, MI made a mere 148 runs for the loss of nine wickets. In reply, CSK scored 125 runs for the loss of nine wickets, and MI won the IPL by 23 runs.

PBKS finished in first place in 2014 and qualified for the final. KKR finished in second place and qualified for the final after winning the first qualifier. CSK and MI were in third and fourth places, respectively.

PBKS defeated two-time champions, CSK, in the second qualifier to take on KKR. They made 199 runs for the loss of four wickets. KKR chased down the target of 200 runs in 19.3 overs with three wickets in hand.

In 2015, CSK and MI finished in the first two places. MI won the first qualifier by 25 runs and qualified for the final. RCB were in third place, while RR were in fourth position. CSK defeated RCB in the second qualifier by three wickets on the penultimate delivery.

MI and CSK faced each other in the final for the third time. MI batted first in the final and scored 202 runs for the loss of five wickets. CSK finished with 161 runs for the loss of eight wickets and lost the match by 41 runs. MI equalled CSK’s record of two title wins.

Gujarat Lions won nine out of 14 games in 2016 and finished in first place. RCB were in second place, while SRH and KKR were in third and fourth positions, respectively. RCB defeated GL in the first qualifier. SRH won the second qualifier against GL to face RCB in the final.

SRH scored 208 runs for the loss of seven wickets. In reply, RCB made 200 runs for the loss of seven wickets and lost the match by eight runs.

In 2022, the  Gujarat Titans finished in first place in their debut season. RR were in second place, while Lucknow Super Giants, another debutant, made it to the third position. RCB were in fourth place with eight wins in 14 matches.

GT won the first qualifier against RR by seven wickets after chasing down the target of 189 runs in 19.3 overs. In the final, GT faced RR once again. RR made it to the final after 14 years. RR batted first in the final and made 130 runs for the loss of nine wickets. GT won the match by seven wickets and chased down the target in 18.1 overs.
