Coetzer century contributes to record partnership

Coetzer scored his century, which included 20 fours, from 215 balls and with this only his third innings as an opener in this competition it’s a total that has given him a boost.

“It’s a great confidence builder to score a century, it’s just great to bat out there with Diva (Di Venuto).  We just tried to bat for as long as we can, through the day really, and get us off to the right start.

“We went in tens the whole day, it was quite good fun actually, we started out just trying to get to 10 then, 20, then 30 and that’s how we pushed each other on.

“I was quite lucky, I was outscoring Diva at one point and that doesn’t happen often! He started pushing the score on and took a bit of the pressure off me but I carried on batting, I wanted to spend time out there.

“I’ve had a few tough times, as every cricketer does, and it’s great to have someone like Diva to bat alongside with when you’re out there. He’s just great, almost too good! I just kept my head down to try to score runs and bat for as long as I can.

“It nipped around with the new ball, but stayed a little bit low.  There is definitely a little bit there for the bowlers. It’s just how you find it and extract it”, he said.

Coetzer and Di Venuto’s opening stand beat the previous record of 202, “There were a couple of records that we were aware of but it was when we heard the clapping from the crowd that we realised we had achieved something.  Even though we were close to some of these milestones we were just looking at getting to the next 10.

“It was all a bit disappointing being run out, we weren’t aware we were near that score, it’s a shame because it takes a long time to get back up to that score so maybe one day we’ll get another chance”, added Coetzer.

Durham have so far picked up three batting points and will look to push on to gain the maximum on day two, the side need 12 points to secure the championship in front of a home crowd but the team are taking nothing for granted – and are taking things as they come.

“We’ve got to try and put a big total on the board and push the game in the way we want it to go.  We just keep saying that we have to take it day by day, session by session and we’ll see what happens”.
