Harmison expects Durham success to continue

“Hopefully, I can do my bit for Durham at the start of the season, but I’m ambitious and I want to play for England in the Ashes. Im looking forward to starting the season here, but I’m sure the Club will carry on their success whether I’m here or not. We’ll be starting the season looking to defend our title and win it again.”

Stephen is confident that the team can continue to perform to the highest standard and that with development on and off at the field, the future looks rosy.  “It’s simple. If we go out and enjoy our cricket, we’ll see where that takes us. We have some very good young players coming through and we also have some very good, calm senior players, and I think that good blend will help. It’s a good balance, and thats the way we’ve been successful in the last couple of years.

“We know what we’re about. We’re a Test venue and, if you look at the stand now, its’ shaping up lovely. Its going to be an arena to behold in the next two or three years.  We’re going to keep fighting our way and with the young lads we’ve got, the future is bright here.”

Harmy thinks that hunger for more success is important for 2009 and that there is plenty of that in the dressing room, “there has to be – there’s no point turning up if there’s not. The lads are hungry. We won our first trophy the year before, then we went one better and won the championship. But there’s further to go. There’s a group of 20-odd lads here – young and experienced – and all they want to do is enjoy their cricket. If they do that, I’m sure we’ll be successful again.”

Stephen will be available for selection for Durham’s opening LV County Championship match against Yorkshire, which starts at 11.00am on 22 April.
