Smith: We have the opportunity to put things right quickly

“It’s never good to lose but with Wednesday coming around so quickly, playing against the same side gives us a chance to put things right quickly.  We need to put this game out of our minds and concentrate on what we did right at Lord’s and what we did right against Durham University.

“We need to get back into the four day game, it’s the nature of the season, these days you have so many games thick and fast, contrasting different formats and that’s something we were brilliant at last year, adapting to different formats, and that’s going to be very much key now”, said Smith.

Durham’s match sees the team taking to the field as defending champions for the first time in the 2009 LV County Championship.  “It brings added pressure but it’s a pressure you want to have.  It means that you’ve been successful before and I know everyone out there wants to carry on that and make sure we really are that team to beat this year”, added Smith.

Durham spinner Gareth Breese scored 29 off 28 balls, the second highest score after Dale Benkenstein, as well as claiming the wicket of Michael Vaughan.  “I just want to do the best I can for Durham, to win games and contribute whatever I can.  When the opportunity comes along I’d like to play my part.  There are new faces in the dressing room and new challenges to overcome so I just want to be in the right place, be in good form and hopefully when the team need me I can answer their call”, said Breese.

On the team’s new captain Breese added, “It’s been really good, he’s a got the ability to do a really good job and its unfortunate that we’ve started on a losing note in our first competitive game.

“It’s good to have the kind of team he’s got behind him in the dressing room and I’m sure we can pull ourselves back and make it a good season for him and for Durham.  Will is at the stage where he had a really good season last year so is very confident as a player; all things indicate that he is the man for the job, who will probably take Durham that step further.”
