Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru kicked off IPL 2026 with a dominant six wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Ishan Kishan played a captain’s knock of 80 off 38 balls on his captaincy debut for SRH. Aniket Verma provided late fireworks with 43 off 18 balls to push the total to 201/9.

However, RCB’s chase was breathtaking. Devdutt Padikkal, the impact substitute, smashed 61 off just 26 balls. Virat Kohli remained imperious with an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls. Meanwhile, captain Rajat Patidar blitzed 31 off 12 deliveries in between. Jacob Duffy starred with 3/22 on debut as RCB chased down 202 in just 15.4 overs with more than four overs to spare.

First Innings Highlights

Jacob Duffy rocked SRH early on his RCB debut. He dismissed Abhishek Sharma for 7 with a sharp short ball that induced a top edge. Furthermore, he sent back Travis Head in the same over with a flat pull straight to deep backward square leg. Nitish Kumar Reddy lasted just six balls before Duffy claimed his third wicket. Consequently, SRH slumped to 33/3 inside the powerplay.

Ishan Kishan then launched an incredible counterattack, smashing 16 runs off Abhinandan Singh’s first over including two sixes. Additionally, Kishan reached 80 off 38 balls before Salt produced another spectacular diving catch at the point boundary.

Aniket Verma then exploded in the death overs with three sixes and a four. He smashed 17 runs off Romario Shepherd’s 19th over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar kept things tight in the final over as SRH finished on 201/9.

Second Innings Highlights

Phil Salt fell early for 8, caught by Klaasen off Jaydev Unadkat in the second over. However, impact substitute Devdutt Padikkal walked in and immediately took charge. He smashed a six off his very first ball, flicking Unadkat over deep backward square leg. Padikkal then hammered 18 runs off David Payne in the fourth over including two sixes.

Moreover, he and Virat Kohli brought up their 50 run stand in just 27 balls. Kohli joined the carnage with a six and a four off Unadkat in the fifth over. Padikkal reached his fifty off just 21 balls with a thumped drive over mid off. Consequently, RCB raced to 76/1 at the end of the powerplay. Kohli smashed a magnificent straight six off Eshan Malinga in the seventh over.

The pair’s century partnership came up when Padikkal swept Harsh Dubey for six in the ninth over. Padikkal eventually fell for 61 off 26 balls including seven fours and four sixes.
