First Innings Highlights

South Africa posted a competitive 187/6 after winning the toss would have been more ideal for Afghanistan. The innings belonged to the 114-run partnership between Quinton de Kock (59 off 41) and Ryan Rickelton (61 off 28), which transformed the game after captain Aiden Markram fell early for just 5.

Rickelton was particularly destructive, smashing four sixes and five fours in his blistering knock. The momentum shifted dramatically when Rashid Khan struck twice in the 13th over, removing both set batsmen within three balls.

Afghanistan clawed back brilliantly in the death overs, with Azmatullah Omarzai’s slower balls proving highly effective. Despite David Miller’s 20 and Marco Jansen’s late cameo of 16 off 7, South Africa managed just 28 runs in the final two overs.

Second Innings Highlights

Afghanistan’s chase was single-handedly carried by the magnificent Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who blasted 84 off just 42 deliveries with seven sixes and four fours. The opener raced to a 26-ball fifty and put Afghanistan firmly in control with aggressive strokeplay, particularly targeting George Linde who conceded 31 in his first two overs.

However, South Africa fought back through Lungi Ngidi’s brilliant use of slower balls, claiming 3/26 including the crucial wicket of Ibrahim Zadran (12). Keshav Maharaj’s spectacular caught-and-bowled to dismiss Gurbaz in the 13th over swung momentum back. Despite Rashid Khan’s cameo (20 off 12) and Noor Ahmad’s brave hitting, Afghanistan needed 5 off the final ball.

The last-wicket pair attempted a suicidal second run, resulting in Fazalhaq Farooqi’s run-out and a tied match at 187.

South Africa’s chase saw nerves and controversy as Kagiso Rabada overstepped twice, including once when Noor Ahmad was caught – the resulting free-hits kept Afghanistan’s hopes alive.

Needing 2 off the final delivery after Noor’s six, Afghanistan attempted a risky second run but Farooqi was run out for 0, leaving both teams level at 17/1, forcing an unprecedented second super over.

With the stadium erupting, Gurbaz attempted another maximum but holed out to long-on, sparking wild South African celebrations. South Africa’s narrow escape completed one of the tournament’s most unforgettable matches.
