Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been dealt a major setback just hours before IPL 2026 kicks off. Sri Lanka Cricket denied an NOC to fast bowler Nuwan Thushara after he failed to clear his physical performance test.
The decision leaves RCB without a key overseas pacer for the season. The franchise already faces uncertainty over Josh Hazlewood’s fitness after hamstring and Achilles injuries. RCB now urgently need a replacement signing before they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament opener on March 28 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Why Did Sri Lanka Cricket Block Thushara From Playing IPL 2026
SLC had earlier stated that Thushara’s NOC depended entirely on his physical performance test results. The board confirmed he did not meet the required fitness standards. This follows a pattern with Sri Lankan players this season.

Wanindu Hasaranga also skipped his fitness test and remains doubtful for Lucknow Super Giants. However, other Sri Lankan players like Ishan Malinga, Kamindu Mendis, Dushmantha Chameera, Pathum Nissanka, and Dasun Shanaka all received clearance to participate.
How Does Thushara’s Absence Impact RCB’s Bowling Attack
RCB now face a twin overseas pace crisis. Hazlewood has not recovered from the injuries that kept him out of the entire Ashes. Thushara’s denial adds another gap in the fast bowling department.
The franchise also lost Yash Dayal for the season due to personal reasons. This leaves head coach Andy Flower with limited seam bowling options heading into the title defence.
Three Overseas Pacers RCB Could Sign as Thushara’s Replacement
| Player | Country | T20 Wickets | Key Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gerald Coetzee | South Africa | IPL experience with MI and GT | Pace, bounce, and recent T20I form |
| Ottneil Baartman | South Africa | 7 wickets in 4 T20Is vs NZ | Versatile pace and variations |
| Josh Tongue | England | 14 wickets in 6 Hundred games | Swing bowling and higher release point |
Coetzee stands out as the most experienced option with prior IPL stints at Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans. He recently picked up eight wickets in five T20Is against New Zealand at an economy rate of 6.21. Baartman offers consistency and adaptability across match situations. Tongue brings a different dimension with swing bowling and showed impressive form in The Hundred last season.
