Brendon McCullum’s tenure as England head coach hangs in the balance following the Ashes defeat and India’s thrashing of England in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal at Wankhede Stadium.

With the England and Wales Cricket Board reportedly pondering a coaching change, speculation is mounting over who could replace the Kiwi veteran and lead England’s next era.

After England’s seven-run semifinal defeat to India, Brendon McCullum expressed his desire to continue as head coach. “I love the job. It’s a great job. I feel we have achieved some really cool things over the last few years, but there is still so much to achieve with the side, across all formats. I would love to carry on,” McCullum told Sky Sports.

He acknowledged needing time to reflect and objectively assess what is and isn’t working before determining the next steps. Here are hopeful candidates for England’s Head coach position.

Jonathan Trott: The Giant Killer

Former England batter Jonathan Trott emerges as a strong contender with 52 Tests, 3,835 runs, and recent coaching success transforming Afghanistan into a top-tier team. Under Trott, Afghanistan reached their first ICC semifinal in 2024, defeated Australia and New Zealand, and secured a historic ODI series win against South Africa.

Trott’s deep understanding of English cricket, proven ability to develop underdog teams into giants, and recent availability after concluding his Afghanistan tenure make him a compelling choice. His disciplined approach could offer an alternative to the high-risk “Bazball” strategy.

Andrew Flintoff: The Bazball Successor

England and Wales Cricket Board director Rob Key has backed Andrew Flintoff as a primary candidate. The former all-rounder was appointed England Lions head coach in late 2024 and led Northern Superchargers to significant performance improvement. He also served as a consultant for England’s senior team during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Though Flintoff publicly denied interest, his recent departure from Northern Superchargers makes him available for a full-time national role. As a leader similar to Ben Stokes, he understands when players need support or blunt honesty.

Kumar Sangakkara: The Technical Maestro

Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara brings world-class credentials with a Test average over 57. He spent seven years as Rajasthan Royals’ director of cricket and head coach, leading them to the IPL 2022 final and 2024 playoffs while building a successful partnership with Jos Buttler.

Sangakkara’s technical perfection could counterbalance England’s aggressive approach. Currently focused on dual responsibilities at Rajasthan Royals, coaching England might be an opportunity he’d grab with both hands.

Eoin Morgan: The Architect of Modern England Cricket

Eoin Morgan transformed England from an outdated side to 2019 World Cup champions with fearless cricket that McCullum eventually adopted. His high cricket IQ could significantly help the current core of Buttler, Harry Brook, and Jofra Archer.

Though Morgan ruled himself out of immediate vacancies in 2024-2025, the Professional Cricketers’ Association president could pick up the role to guide England’s evolution.

Gary Kirsten: The World Cup Winner

Gary Kirsten led India to the 2011 World Cup and world No. 1 Test ranking. Described by MS Dhoni as “the best thing to happen to Indian cricket,” Kirsten is a proven man-manager. Rob Key shortlisted him for the Test position in 2022 before choosing McCullum.

Currently serving as Namibia’s high-performance consultant after completing Pakistan’s white-ball coaching stint in 2024, Kirsten has expressed interest, calling England “a really lovely project to work.”
