Chennai Super Kings, the five-time IPL champions and one of the tournament’s most successful franchises, faced a devastating two-year ban from 2016 to 2017 following the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal.

The Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee suspended CSK after finding team official Gurunath Meiyappan guilty of illegal betting and passing inside information to bookies.

Additionally, the committee handed Meiyappan a lifetime ban from all cricket-related activities, marking one of the darkest chapters in Indian cricket history.

The scandal erupted in May 2013 when Delhi Police arrested three Rajasthan Royals players, S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, and Ajit Chandila, on charges of spot-fixing.

Consequently, investigators began examining other franchises for potential corruption. Within weeks, the probe expanded to include team officials and owners.

On May 24, 2013, Mumbai Police arrested Gurunath Meiyappan on charges of betting and sharing insider information with bookies during IPL 2013.

Meiyappan, who was N. Srinivasan’s son-in-law (then-BCCI president and CSK owner), held a prominent position within the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

Meiyappan had been associated with CSK since 2008 and often introduced himself as the “Team Principal.”

He regularly attended auctions, sat in team meetings, and appeared in the dugout during matches. Coach Stephen Fleming even referred to him as CSK’s team owner.

Investigators discovered damning evidence through phone records and witness testimonies. The investigation revealed that Meiyappan placed bets on IPL matches, including games involving CSK.

Moreover, he bet both for and against his own team during the 2013 season. Actor Vindoo Dara Singh, who was also arrested, confessed to placing bets on Meiyappan’s behalf.

The Lodha Committee Verdict

In February 2014, a Supreme Court-appointed panel officially charged Meiyappan with betting and sharing confidential team information with bookies.

Although a two-member BCCI panel found “no wrongdoing” by team owners in July 2014, the three-member committee led by former Chief Justice R.M. Lodha took a stricter view.

On July 14, 2015, the Lodha Committee announced its verdict. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals (whose co-owner Raj Kundra was similarly implicated) received two-year suspensions from the IPL.

Meanwhile, both Meiyappan and Kundra faced lifetime bans from any cricket-related activities.

The committee stated: “The fact that Gurunath was an integral part of CSK and most people saw him as the face of the team, he ought not to have indulged in betting practices.”

Furthermore, the panel criticized India Cements (CSK’s parent company) for failing to take strict action against Meiyappan.

CSK Was Not Banned for Match-Fixing

Contrary to popular belief, CSK was not banned for match-fixing. Instead, the franchise bore responsibility for an official’s corrupt practices.

No CSK players or coaches faced charges. However, the franchise’s association with Meiyappan warranted severe punishment to maintain the IPL’s integrity.

Former High Court Judge Mukul Mudgal, who led the initial inquiry, stated: “There is a current feeling that all matches in the IPL are fixed, which is a totally wrong feeling.

I can only think that this step will restore people’s confidence in the game of cricket.”

The Ban Period and Comeback

During the 2016-2017 ban period, CSK players scattered across franchises. MS Dhoni led Rising Pune Super Giants, while Suresh Raina captained Gujarat Lions, two temporary teams created to fill the void.

CSK returned triumphantly in 2018, winning the championship in their comeback season.

Dhoni later called 2013 “the most difficult phase of my life,” but the team’s resilience proved why they remain the IPL’s most beloved franchise.
