Cricket Australia is on track to host the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Moreover, the Australian board has received positive feedback from both the BCCI and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association after months of discussions.
A five member CA delegation attended the CSK vs SRH IPL fixture at Chepauk on Monday for an official venue recce. Additionally, BCCI president Mithun Manhas joined them at the same game. However, a few final government level discussions still need to be wrapped up before the fixture can be officially locked in.
Why Cricket Australia Wants the BBL Opener in Chennai

The BBL was once regarded as the second best T20 league in the world after the IPL. However, its appeal has dropped sharply in recent years with the rise of SA20 and ILT20 in the same calendar window. Consequently, Cricket Australia is now searching for fresh ways to revive interest in the competition.
India remains the financial powerhouse of world cricket and offers the largest possible audience for any league. Therefore, taking the season opener to Chennai is seen as a strategic step to deepen India-Australia ties. Furthermore, CA’s recent privatisation push has stalled after opposition from New South Wales and Queensland.
How the Chepauk BBL Game Could Play Out
Cricket Australia is expected to buy the opening fixture off the host club to take control of the India leg. As a result, one BBL franchise will lose a home game, which affects its membership and ticket revenue. Sydney Thunder and the two Melbourne clubs, Stars and Renegades, have all shown interest in playing in Chennai.
The travel logistics will also need careful planning since no direct flights exist between Australia and Chennai. In contrast, flights with one stopover from Melbourne or Sydney take roughly 13 hours. Meanwhile, December weather in Chennai brings flooding risk, which CA will also factor into the planning.
Ashwin Factor and Broadcast Window for the BBL Chennai Game
Ravichandran Ashwin had signed for Sydney Thunder for the previous BBL season but withdrew with a knee injury. Notably, he was set to become the first India international to feature in the BBL. If Ashwin features in the Chennai opener at his home ground Chepauk, it could draw a packed house.
Additionally, the match timing remains a key talking point ahead of the broadcast plan. Day games suit Australian broadcast windows since IPL day matches start at 8 PM AEST. Meanwhile, IPL night matches begin at 12 AM AEST and reach a smaller live audience back home.
What Lies Ahead for the BBL Privatisation Push
The Chennai discussion sits separate from the ongoing BBL privatisation debate within Australia. Furthermore, the six states remain split on a proposal to bring private investment into the eight BBL franchises. Cricket Australia is pushing ahead to test the market with Renegades, Perth Scorchers and Hobart Hurricanes.
In contrast, New South Wales and Queensland have rejected the initial proposal outright. South Australia want others to test the market first before committing. Subsequently, NSW are also working on an alternative model that boosts player pay without bringing in private or foreign ownership.
