Chennai Super Kings have received a major injury blow as promising young opener Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the rest of IPL 2026 following a left hamstring tear.
The 18-year-old had been one of CSK’s standout performers this season, making his absence a significant blow to the struggling side.
How the Injury Happened
Mhatre picked up the injury during CSK’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. He walked in early and made an explosive start, scoring 30 runs off just 12 balls.
The trouble began when he pulled up sharply while completing a second run, clutching his hamstring in clear discomfort.

Despite the pain, Mhatre continued to bat, visibly limping between the wickets. He eventually fell to a mistimed shot and was caught in the infield, ending what had been a fighting knock.
CSK later confirmed the seriousness of the injury, stating that he will need six to twelve weeks of rehabilitation before returning to action.
The decision to let him continue batting drew criticism from former CSK and India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who suggested that it may have made the injury worse.
A Big Loss for CSK
Mhatre had been in fine form this season, scoring 201 runs at a strike rate of 177.87, making him CSK’s most effective batter so far. His aggressive approach at the top of the order had brought a clear structure to CSK’s batting, something the team had been struggling to find.
His absence leaves a noticeable gap in an already thin squad. CSK are currently placed eighth in the table with just two wins from six matches. With upcoming fixtures against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians, the pressure is mounting on a side that is also missing pacer Khaleel Ahmed through injury.
Finding a replacement who can match Mhatre’s intent and strike rate at the top will be CSK’s most pressing challenge as they look to revive their IPL 2026 campaign.
CSK Replacement Options
With Ayush Mhatre ruled out, CSK have a few options to fill the gap at the top:
- Urvil Patel – A natural replacement and aggressive powerplay hitter who can maintain CSK’s fast starts.
- Kartik Sharma – Talented but out of form, remains a risky option if backed for a longer run.
- MS Dhoni – A wildcard pick, depending on fitness, who could strengthen the lower order and finishing role.
