Surrey hold the record for the highest total in County Championship Division One history, posting a mammoth 820/9 declared against Durham at The Oval in June 2025.

Dom Sibley’s marathon 305 off 475 balls anchored the innings while Dan Lawrence (178), Will Jacks (119), and Sam Curran (108) all scored centuries in the same innings, making it one of only a handful of matches in English cricket where four batters reached three figures.

Surrey feature three times in the top 10 highest totals, more than any other county. The Oval’s flat batting surface and true bounce have made it the most frequent venue for record-breaking scores, hosting four of the ten highest totals ever recorded in Division One.

These ten innings represent the most dominant batting displays in the history of first-class cricket’s premier domestic competition. Six of the ten came in drawn matches, proving that mammoth totals do not always guarantee victory.

The highest total in County Championship Division One history was built on relentless accumulation across two days at The Oval. Dom Sibley batted for over 10 hours across 475 balls for his career-defining 305, reaching his triple century with 29 fours and 2 sixes. The remarkable feature of this innings was the depth of contributions.

Dan Lawrence smashed 178 off 149 balls at a strike rate of 119, Will Jacks blasted 119 off 94 deliveries, and Sam Curran contributed 108 off 124 balls. Four centurions in a single innings is an extraordinary achievement in county cricket.

Durham’s bowling attack was dismantled across 161.3 overs with George Drissell conceding 247 runs from his 45 overs. Despite the mammoth total, the match ended in a draw as Durham’s Alex Lees scored centuries in both innings (125 and 100*) while Emilio Gay hit an unbeaten 156 in the follow-on.

Taunton’s flat batting paradise produced the second highest total in Division One history when Murray Goodwin anchored a colossal Sussex innings with an unbeaten 344 off 351 balls.

Goodwin’s marathon knock remains one of the greatest individual performances in the competition’s history, featuring 43 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 98. Chris Nash contributed 157 at the top while Carl Hopkinson added 139 in a devastating middle order partnership. The two shared a record-breaking 363 run stand for the fourth wicket that demoralised Somerset’s attack.

Captain Michael Yardy declared at 742/5 after 164 overs, but Somerset survived comfortably with Craig Kieswetter’s unbeaten 135 and Arul Suppiah’s 133 guiding them to 521/6 in a match where 1,263 runs were scored across two innings.

The highest total that actually resulted in a victory belongs to Hampshire, who demolished Nottinghamshire by an innings and 188 runs at The Rose Bowl.

John Crawley was the architect with a breathtaking 311 not out off 421 balls, reaching his triple century in 516 minutes with 35 fours and 4 sixes. Crawley batted through the entire innings, remaining unbeaten as Hampshire piled on runs. Dimitri Mascarenhas provided explosive support with 103 off just 102 balls including 16 fours.

Mascarenhas then took 5/55 in Nottinghamshire’s first innings to enforce the follow-on before Shaun Udal claimed 4/70 in the second innings to complete a comprehensive three day victory. Ironically, Nottinghamshire won the Division One title that season despite this crushing defeat.

Adam Hose played the most destructive innings in the top 10, smashing 266 off 253 balls at a strike rate of 105.13 with 31 fours and 7 sixes. His aggressive approach was perfectly complemented by Jake Libby’s unbeaten 228 off 438 balls in a masterclass of patient accumulation.

Gareth Roderick contributed 80 from number seven to push the total beyond 670. Hampshire were forced to follow on after being bowled out for 221, with Tom Taylor claiming 4/42.

However, Ben Brown’s unbeaten 109 off 270 balls and Liam Dawson’s 60 not out over 152 balls guided Hampshire to 294/4, batting out 117 overs to save the match. Tilak Varma featured for Hampshire with scores of 56 and 47 across both innings.

Conclusion: Surrey’s 820/9d Stands as the Ultimate Benchmark in Division One

The County Championship Division One has produced extraordinary batting displays across two decades of first-class cricket in England and Wales.

Surrey’s 820/9 declared at The Oval in 2025 stands 78 runs clear of Sussex’s 742/5 declared as the competition’s highest ever total, a margin that may take years to overcome.
