Fourteen runs off the final over. The Kingsmen had clawed back from nowhere and were favourites with six balls to go.

Then Iftikhar Ahmed smashed a four and six off Hunain Shah to rip the game away from Hyderabad’s grasp. The man who had destroyed the Kingsmen top order with 4/21 finished the job with bat in hand.

Kusal Perera’s fighting 58 off 35 had dragged HYDK from 34/4 to 145 but it proved insufficient on a slow Karachi surface. Four losses from four for the Kingsmen as Labuschagne stood distraught on the final ball.

First Innings: Perera’s Counter Attack Rescues Kingsmen From 34/4

Iftikhar struck four times in his first two overs to leave the Kingsmen reeling. Maaz fell for 17, Saim miscued to long off, Usman departed for a golden duck and Sharjeel dragged on. At 34/4, the innings looked dead.

Perera walked in swinging and rebuilt alongside Labuschagne with an 82 run fifth wicket stand. He reached fifty off 31 balls before Muqeem ripped through the tail with 4/32. The last five wickets fell for just 9 runs.

Mendis and Babar powered the Zalmi to 56 in the powerplay with clean striking against spin. Saim Ayub then swung the match by removing Mendis for 27 and Bracewell for 25. Hassan Khan trapped Babar lbw for 43 and suddenly the Zalmi needed 30 off four overs with half their side gone.

Mohammad Ali and Hunain Shah bowled two extraordinary overs, conceding just four runs while taking two wickets. The equation came down to 14 off the final over.

Iftikhar smashed a four through midwicket and a six downtown off a missed yorker. Jamal chopped the last ball to point and scampered through for the winning single.
