Scotland delivered a commanding performance at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, crushing tournament debutants Italy by 73 runs to register their first victory of the T20 World Cup 2026.

After being inserted to bat, Scotland posted their highest-ever T20 World Cup total of 207/4, built on George Munsey’s explosive 84 off 54 balls and Brandon McMullen’s scintillating unbeaten 41 off just 18 deliveries.

Michael Leask provided the perfect finishing touches with a breathtaking 22 off 5 balls in the final over, plundering 22 runs from Thomas Draca to power Scotland past 200.

Italy’s chase was derailed from the very first ball when Justin Mosca fell to Leask, and despite a spirited 73-run partnership between brothers Harry (37) and Ben Manenti (52), the target proved insurmountable.

Leask starred with the ball too, claiming sensational figures of 4/17 to secure a comprehensive 73-run victory, the second-largest win margin for an associate team in T20 World Cup history.

Tragedy struck Italy when captain Wayne Madsen dislocated his left shoulder in the 4th over, ruling him out. Munsey fell for 84 in the 14th over, caught by Harry Manenti off Grant Stewart (1/44), while Jones departed for 37 in the next over.

Brandon McMullen then unleashed an unbeaten 41 off 18 balls, including back-to-back sixes in the 16th over. Michael Leask’s explosive 22 off 5 balls in the final over, FOUR, TWO, FOUR, SIX, SIX, SIX, powered Scotland to 207/4, the first 200-plus score by any associate nation in T20 World Cup history. Ali Hasan (1/21) was Italy’s best bowler.

JJ Smuts counter-attacked aggressively with 22 off 11 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes), smashing Brad Wheal for 23 runs in a single over before Brad Currie’s slower ball deceived him for 22. Anthony Mosca (13) fell to Mark Watt in the 5th over, leaving Italy reeling at 40/3.

The Manenti brothers, Harry and Ben, steadied the ship with a defiant 73-run partnership. Harry struck 37 off 25 balls (1 four, 3 sixes) with aggressive strokeplay, while Ben compiled a fighting 52 off 31 balls (5 fours, 1 six), reaching his fifty off 29 deliveries.

Mark Watt (2/24) and Brad Wheal (1/28) supported well as Italy were bowled out for 134 in just 16.4 overs, falling 73 runs short, Scotland’s biggest T20 World Cup victory.
